"oil service" on e39 M5
Discussion
The quote was from a BMW indie --- I do want the stamps in the book to be honest. How soon after the read out comes up should I do the oil service?
I have to drive to Brussels on Friday morning and absolutely do not have time to take it in....is this a seriously bad idea?
Excuse the seemingly ignorant questions!

You should be fine doing a few more miles before changing the oil. There is no set mileage between oil services as the computer monitors driving style and calculates when it thinks a change is due. The oil will not suddenly become 'damaging' to the engine if you do a few hundred miles beyond the service interval your computer suggests.
Worth getting a fixed price from a main dealer though as long as you ask for the Four Plus deal when you speak to them - they can be suprisingly competitive on price!
Lovely M5 by the way!

not sw london but cpc automotive in aylesbury/hemel...
Well, they are actually in Chorley wood, just off the M25 J18. They look after all my BMW's.http://cpcpe.com/index.html
Ask for Phil, say Charlie sent you and they will quote you happy.
Local main dealer down here does 4plus which gives 20% off labour and oil for 4-6 year old cars. The 6plus for cars over 6 years old gives 50% off labour and 20% off oil. I'm sure these deals are across the national dealership so it might be worth enquiring as a main dealer stamp/history is a positive selling point on any BM especially a M to me.

If she runs low the message is
"check engine oil level"
That one is a scary one.
This can come up for no-reason occasionally. Its not at all caring to just respond to this warning with a litre of the black-stuff. Park on level ground, leave the engine to idle for 1 min, then off for 1 min, then take a manual reading."check engine oil level"
That one is a scary one.
Checking oil level consists of getting oil up to 75c minimum then letting it tick over for 15 seconds then turning off and waiting for 60 seconds before checking.
Mine will burn 500ml or 1/2 a litre however you measure it in about 10 minutes if I try hard enough although I don't fancy the idea of being caught doing it!

I know that's what it says in the manual (oh no, I've read the manual, I'm not a REAL man
) but I've checked it stone cold, then taken it for a run then checked it warm and it comes up with the same reading.TimR69 said:
