i ask this because my brother has been asked by his manager to see his licence...no problem... but when the manager said he would like to photocopy it my brother refused.

Eh? Ofcourse it's legal, probably for insurance purposes, proof of who you are etc etc.

LOL, what a tit!

He's right to be careful. If it's a photo card then there's been a spate recently of people photocopying them and then cutting them out and gluing them onto credit cards to make fake car licences.

Someone did the same thing with my library card and took out a load of Jeffrey Archer books. Took me ages to clear my name with the dear old lady behind the counter.

Umm let me think about this- anybody who he lets take a photocopy!

Most employers will want a photocopy of this sort of thing, especially if he is driving company cars etc.

No, he's just one of those annoying twonks at work who likes to go against the grain for the sake of it, rather than just getting on with his work. I bet at the next break (which he was timing to the second on his watch) he was rallying all his comrades to stand up to the evil overseer and not disclose any ID information.

OP, I'm not being serious, I'm sure your brother isn't this bad. He just needs to show his licence for the company car insurance, and they'll reasonably request a copy. He may never drive a company vehicle, it's just a handy 'just in case' to have.

My old paper one would come up with PHOTOCOPY accross it on any of the duplicates.

I needed a colour copy of my passport for something a couple of years ago and it took me ages to find somewhere that would do it for me as it's apparently illegal to copy in colour.

Dunno about that, we have to take copies of passports to prove compliance with money laundering regs at work. I'm sure a number of these have been colour copies. Our technical compliance manager would almost certainly have stopped this if it's illegal.

If he is that worried just say sure but request that the copy be defaced with something like PHOTOCOPY across the image or some such.

It is a good idea to be wary of ID fraud and the more coppies of ones important id there is the greater the risk of something being picked up by someone less honorable and using it inapprorpiatly but on the other hand, we have ID for a reason and sometimes it does need to be shown and copies retained - catch 22

It'll be to stop illegal migrant workers. Every illegal worker you employ is liable for a £5k fine. A photocopy of a proof of identity and visa if non-EU gets you out of this liability.

I'd tell him not to come back if he refused.
