Hi all.
I need a bit of help trying to put a value on a 3000s.
Built during 1978 it has a photographic record of body off chassis restoration during 1988. Covered 85000 miles but only done 5000 with last owner in twelve years. Body work is a bit tatty in places as is interior trim. Mechanically it seems OK. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Surrey/Kent borders. 10 miles from Croydon. Car belongs to a neighbour and I am trying to help him out. Do you know this car?

A lot depends on general condition. I reckon it's worth around 7 to 9K (big margin!) Will it need a respray, new hood, tonneau? Look at the state of the wiring loom and connections front O/S. How original is everything - wheels, underbonnet, brakes, suspension, ally fuel tank (not original but highly desirable)? There's a growing trend towards originality, especially since the 3000S is becoming harder to find. Offer 6K

Just been MOT'd. No tax. Declared SORN to avoid fines.
Any one here interested in the car?

If it's the car I think it is, he has been trying to sell it on and off for at least seven years. I looked at it in the autumn of '97, and decided he was asking far too much, despite the body off rebuild and the photographic record. As I recall, the inner screen frame was pretty rusty and in need of replacement. There was also a gouge in the bodywork just behind the driver's door, possibly caused by dropped hinges (now cured). The body needed other work, but I can't remember details. As you say, the interior trim was past it's best also.
The car belonged to John Hayter in the late 80's, and I think it appeared on the front cover of Sprint. John went on to become TVRCC chairman, and the last I heard, still had another 3000S.
As to it's worth, in view of the work required, I would say 6-7K, but that's only what I would pay. Others may think it worth more.
I have a couple of photos of John driving the car at Paddock Wood Hop Farm, Kent in an autotest in '89.
Hope that helps,

Paul.

Iam surprised a scruffy 3000s is worth that much. Might as well get a nice S3

Sounds like this is the same car. The owner is a neighbour of mine and has asked if I can help sell it for him. The details appear on my website at www.rhinomotorsport.co.uk
I know he will let it go for a bit under £6000.
If anyone wants to view, let me know and i'll put you in touch.

The car was in my possesion when it appeared on the front cover of Sprint, the photo was taken during a session when Thoroughbred & Classic Cars did a test comparison of the old and new S. I think this was around 1988. I still have a copy of the mag somewhere. John sold the car and I subsequently found him a later 3000S which Jim Gambsby and I rebuilt for him.

I'd say it was worth a lot less than the price being mentioned; I have a 1981(W) 3000S for sale (will be advertised next month) for £5950 and it sounds like it's in better condition than the silver car. Still, if anyone is serious about buying one, I'd advise them to look at as many available and they can make their own minds up.

Small world isn't it?
He (his name was Steve?) wanted over 9K back in '97.
I found it very difficult to look at many cars as so few were on the market at the time. I ended up buying a very nice S3, which I kept for 5 yrs before moving on to a Griff last Feb. I still have a big soft spot for M series cars though, having owned a 3000M for 8 years in the eighties. I may well look for a 3000S in a few years when I get too old/staid/terrified for the Griff .
The Sprint concerned is Sept '88, reg No NCK 771T.
You must have sold it to John then, Colin. Did you carry out the overhaul in '88 with the photographic record that the vendor now has?
