BBC reporting that any sympathy he had before is now gone!

Well nice of them to remain impartial as the story unfolds, and they are wrong as I dont think he had any sympathy before!

He's such a muppet. He's already looking at "why these letters were never sent", so it's already someone elses fault.

He's happy to take the credit for his "personal" apporach when he does remeber though, but if he forgets, it is someone else's gaff!

To be fair to Winky, did you expect him to lick the stamp himself and post the letter personally into the letterbox?

Im no defender of Winky but this is another non-story.
Why should a Prime Minister make time to write a personal letter to the family of every dead soldier? It was a stupid idea of Winkys if you ask me. His aides weren't doing their jobs properly either if they omitted to remind him.

Because it's his duty as the man who deployed the soldier on active service? Because it's official MOD protocol? Because Thatcher, Major and Blair all managed to?

The PM is expected to write to the next of kin of all personnel KIA. The Secretary of State for Defence will write too, also including all deaths while in the service. The letters are not that personal as they're usually prepared by the relevant single service secretariat (same goes for letters from senior officers on behalf of the service).

Out of interest. What happened during the Falklands war? Did Mrs. Thatcher send any personal messages or was it just a letter from the Regiment/MOD or what?

Just wondering how people were treated then.

As above really, whilst I hate the man with a passion and would volunteer for the firing squad for him and Mr Bliar, this is not much of a story. Just an admin error by the sounds of it.

No, but if he is going to bang on about how he writes them, I would suggest he should errr...write them! !

Thatcher wrote the letters and is credited with establishing this convention.

Were these also handwritten or typed and signed?

Will try and find out smile

apparently

"according to journalist Matthew Parris, who worked for her for the two years before the 1979 election, would often take place late at night when, despite her tough image, she would craft warm and sympathetic missives.

Her handwriting, was clearer than Brown’s and Parris says Thatcher would never have let a hastily corrected name slip through but would have “ripped the letter up and started again”"

I thought as much smile. And Blair (skipping Major) carried on this tradition as well?

Yes. Some didn't welcome it while others were proud to display the letters on programmes such as The Fallen.

I concur. Just as the ridiculous Mirror front page with Cameron buying choccy bars and putting it on expenses. Christ this country has more important issues to sort out.
