Pearl Harbour photoes
Discussion
I know this is a long post, but someone sent me these photoes the other day, and I found them interesting, from a historical standpoint, and not only for the photographs themselves, but the fact that a film had survived so long in a camera. Note some of the sailors are just standing there, not running, strange I thought, anyway hope someone may find them as interesting as I did.
Bit of narrative first from the post received:-
PHOTOS STORED IN AN OLD BROWNIE CAMERA TAKEN 68 YEARS AGO
Thought you might find these photos very interesting; what quality from 1941.
Pearl Harbor photos found in an old Brownie stored in a foot locker. and just recently taken to be developed.
THESE PHOTOS ARE FROM A SAILOR WHO WAS ON THE USS QUAPAW ATF-11O.
I THINK THEY'RE SPECTACULAR!
PEARL HARBOR December 7th, 1941
And some of the pictures :-

This one shows a diving chamber on the jetty. Its an Erricson McCann, used to rescue 33 submariners from the USS SQUALUS which sank in 250 fsw in 1939.

Least we forget :-
When it was over, the U..S. Losses were:
Casualties
US Army: 218 KIA, 364 WIA.
US Navy: 2,008 KIA, 710 WIA.
US MarineCorp: 109 KIA, 69 WIA.
Civilians: 68 KIA, 35 WIA.
TOTAL: 2,403 KIA, 1,178 WIA.
(I assume KIA is "Killed in Action", and WIA is "Wounded in Action"
With a bit of luck, I have posted this in the right forum for a change.

The photos are genuine. The story behind the e-mail (which has been doing the rounds for a while), is fake.
These pictures are fairly well known and were largely professional shots taken by press, army and navy photographers. You can tell from the quality of the pictures that they were taken by professional equipment and not a humble box camera.
Also, no one photographer could have taken all those pictures as he would have needed to have been darting all over the harbour area taking shots - in the middle of an air raid.
Oh - and it's a repost on PH too

And, of course, the correct spelling is "Pearl HARBOR" - loathe though I am to promote American spelling. But, in this context, the spelling relates to a "Proper Noun" so should retain its American style.
Absolutely correct Eric, I just changed it to like proper english.......
silly me.

Anniversary today.
Indeed, god rest their souls.
I watched the film for the first time on Saturday night and I was absolutely chocked (apart from the shumltzy bits)... although I was later told the film got bad reviews.
"Tora Tora Tora" is far better..........

intresting pics...i was wondering last night when watching the film what does it all look like now?
It mostly just looks like a modern US Naval base as it is still in use, with the exception of the USS Missouri moored up as a floating museum, and the fact that you can see the USS Arizona on the bed of the harbour, left where it sank as a memorial.Gassing Station | The Lounge | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
