Hi Chaps,

Bit of advice needed. I am looking at buying a Speed Master. Before I buy a brand new one - discounted price, should I look out for any vintage or special editions? I have around £4,000 to spend. I already own a few other watches so not looking for alternatives.

Thanks,

Simon.

There is a 40th Anniversary edition out at the moment which looks nice.

Snoopies are always popular and limited to 5441 pieces so good and rare.

Whichever you go for enjoy, I love mine (standard moonwatch)

Having bought a Speedy Olympics, I can safely say if you dont get the Speedy Pro Moon watch then you'll always be yearning for it!

£1995 on the high street but you could easily haggle it down to £1700

With the budget available I'd be looking for a birth year vintage personally. Most of the limited editions aren't all that limited in terms of numbers.

The everyday downsides of a true moon-spec Speedmaster are, of course, a hand-wound mechanism (rather than automatic), and a hesalite face (rather than the superior sapphire)...

I don't see eather as a downside! I enjoy winding mine and the Hesolite is easy to polish up if it gets a mark or two using Polywatch/

O.P., there is a limited edition 50th version, not the 'Patch' but the one with 1957 written under Omega, it is very special, display back, blued screws, manual winding co-axial movement etc, superb presentation box with tools etc, just a stunning piece.

I've just taken delivery of a Speedy Co-axial and absolutely love it. Good price from Watchfinder.co.uk. Reasons I didn't go for the Pro are that I wanted a date function, wanted sapphire crystal and prefer an automatic to a manual winder. I also like the clear caseback as shown above. But I doubt you'd be unhappy with either, and I don't think I'll come to regret not getting the Moonwatch, although many on here will disagree. Try them all, the co-ax is a pretty large watch so if you have very slim wrists (mine are just quite slim) it may not suit.

I have an original Speed Master that needs some TLC. Does anyone know a) who's recommended to carry out the work, and b) if it's worth doing (value vs refurb cost)?

The back of the Speed Master 50th Anniversary is totally lovely btw.

I bought a standard Moonwatch from Swansea Goldsmiths in the summer 08, just after the price hike to 1950, and paid 1600.

I think the prices have gone up again since then...

Get a quote from the Omega store on Bond Street. I've seen a couple of watches that friends have booked in for a service, and they look like new when they come back. Well worth it.

To the OP, for that budget (assuming that you want to spend it all on one watch - presumably I'd buy a couple) you could look at something significantly more historic than the watch in its new state. You could very easily buy a lovely "pre-moon" version for that!
