As it says really, working with a very fine chap who is an OBE, but doesnt refer to his good self as "Sir" should I out of respect?

No. A knight is a sir.

My Grandad was Bevan to most people, Grandad to me though.

He never liked anyone to call him sir.

He wasn't. Maybe I wrote that wrong. He was given a OBE. I guess for his charity work after setting up a Hospice and building a couple of Orphanages Romania, and setting up the fund raising for setting them up.
