How many would you deem an 'acceptable' number to have over the course of a year?

office based work & excluding major illness etc.

14 in the Civil Service, 10 if you're on a bonus.

we're allowed 2 periods of sickness absence per year. the 3rd gets you a verbal warning, written on the 4th, sacked on the 5th.

obviously if you have a good reason backed up by GP and works doctor then its different. i have a by as i suffer migraines.

We get sick "lives". I.e no more than 3 periods of sick in a rolling 12 months or you have to have a chat.

So, if you feeling crap on a Monday and don't go in, there is no reason to go in for the rest of the week.

The mind boggles

Consider using the "Bradford Factor".

Number of Occasions of Sickness * Number of Occasions of Sickness * Total Number of Days of Sickness

Scoring over 100 should probably mean a "return to work interview" after further sickness incidents. Any score over 300 definitely needs attention.

A score over 800 or 900 or so is probably enough to get someone the sack.

It may be high or it may be reasonable. Two bouts of the flu off for a week each time is probably OK. That would be 2 * 2 * 10 = 40.

Taking a day off on the last Friday of the month with regularity would come out at 12 * 12 * 1 = 144 = not OK, time for questions to be asked.

You choose the levels and what actions are taken. The factor is simply a means of writing "rules" into the Employee Handbook...

Just ask any of the self-employed guys on here then. Sick days wouldn't be an issue if people weren't still paid whilst ill/hungover/skiving rolleyes

Depends, though. If that was 3 incidents of a couple of days that would be 3 * 3 * 6 = 54. The factor would reckon you genuine.

The girls here at work have days off if they have a headache or a little sniffle. Last year a girl ran our of sick days (more than 30) and had to take half pay for all subsequent sick days.
I had swine 'flu and was only off for 8 working days. Only illness this year so far. Touch wood.

No sick pay, no holiday pay, no pension, get paid only if you do your job properly and if you bring income in. Life's a beach when you are self-employed teacher.

You mean contractor? Isn't that the new name given to tax-dodging employees who fancied a decent hourly rate? wink
