Newcomer in need of advice

New to PistoHeads,living in York and I,m concidering buying my first TVR ( Chimaera 4/5 yrs old ) in the near future. I was advised to speak to you nice chaps at PistonHeads first. I,m hopeing some of you experienced owners may have some good advice on what I should be looking out for and possibly some good questions I should be asking of a technical nature etc etc...Also, newer car with higher miles or older car with less miles??? Any help would be appreciated and I look forward to any replies. Cheers

This has been asked a few times now, therefore I suggest looking on past threads to see previous advice..
Personally I bought from a dealer in sussex and have never looked back, its pure piece of mind this route with the warranty and all.
Go for the best maintained for the money you can afford, the Rover V8 goes on forever if looked after!

Dont believe all you hear about reliability, there are plenty of excellent cars out there that are a joy to own.
Keep an eye on cars for sale on here & other websites, this will give you an idea of the sort of money cars are selling for on the open market. You will then know if what a dealer is offering you is good value. (it will be dearer but you get peace of mind)
Why not join your local TVRCC, go along & ask a few questions. They will be happy to help Im sure...it worked for me when I bought my Griff a couple of years ago.

Also, if you want a professional opinion and someone to find you a good TVR you may wish to make contact with this PH member. James wasn't trading when I bought my Chim otherwise I would've given him a call. Lots of people here have had a very good things to say about him.
Finally, the other option you have is to use someone like Rob Ingleby. He found and inspected my Chimaera for me. Nice chap to deal with and having a full inspection gave me a large degree of reassurance. Again, quite a few members have used him in the past.

I was in the same situation as yourself in May. I bought my first chim 400 from Peter Bennett at Cheshire TVR [url]www.cheshiretvr.co.uk[/url] He seems an honest chap with good cars offering good value.
After having the 400 for a while I wanted more power, so ended up buying a 500 from HHC. This is something to keep in mind, are you bothered about masses of power (the 400 is still very quick by the way)? As buying a 450 or 500 first could save you a few quid further down the line.
You could come along to the drive out this Sunday, see thread link:

Thanx for the response. I live between York and Harrogate and will most likely buy from a dealer, one of which is based in Harrogate. As mentioned, it would give peace of mind for a while as I,m aware there are more reliable makes out there.
Nick is quite right. I've done 27k in my 5L over a little more than 2.5 years. It's never left me stranded. Quite frankly the reliablity stuff is blown out of all proportion. Keep your car regularly looked after and deal with any problems promptly and you'll be fine.
