hi there folks

1st post on the site so be gentle with me!! lol

car has recently been running on a power module with decent gains till ecu updates started blocking the signals, car has done 25,000miles now, and just been remapped.
the car has had timing issues in past, but was sorted in sept with new tensioner for timing chain.

the map thats been put on, should be around 210bhp and 220lb.ft, but on dyno the day after the map went on, figures were well below, 180bhp and the power graphs were all over the place, also boost reading was way below what we had in the car on testing it on the friday and what boost gauge reads in car this now and on the dyno itself. the tuner also mapped 4 other cars on the day at our meet and all went really well.

car is on original spark plugs, getting new ones asap, could these make upsuch a difference on the power issue? the original ones are pretty worn out and could they be the cause off the up and down graphs on the dyno? can a new map take time to settle in after i have had the power module running for around 10k miles? should see pic off the old plugs below.

thanks in advance

Well personally I think 180 bhp is still a damn good result from a turbocharged 998cc Mini engine so what are you grumbling about?

From memory a standard 998cc A series Mini was about 40 bhp so I have no idea where you're getting 175 bhp from.

Well since you couldn't be bothered to tell us what car it was I decided it was a 998cc A series Mini. In future if you want help maybe it would be a good idea to impart information.

Well Puma has a point - you rock up and dive straight in with questions and dont even tell us what car you have.
What makes you think those spark plugs are worn?

And when people think because their car doesnt make xxx bhp on a particular dyno, oh there must be something wrong with it.

Load of balls. People dream up all sorts of numbers in their head, which all gets worse when they actually go to a dyno.

If the number is low....oh st, something is wrong with the car. Or if the number is high...WOW my car is a fking rocket.

Nevermind the fact different dynos read different !!!!

Unless you're comparing a before and after with this alleged tuning, the actual numbers dont really mean a lot.

I think some chaps may be a bit hard on this guy!

After all, it isn't always easy to remember to impart all the info.....

Anyhoo, I think those plugs look fine and the colour looks pretty good too.

It could be a problem with the leads, but more likely a sensor fault as if I recall those engines were very sensor reliant and being somewhat French, they didn't always last the course.

What age is it again?

Can you read any faults?

Its impossible to tell if the engine is running right from those plugs. That's only an indication of how it was running, as the engine was shut off....which in his case was probably very normal driving, or perhaps idling for a while.

What's changed.... The new map. I'd be pointing fingers at that before anything else.

Spark plugs will not loose you that much hp, if they did you'd be losing one completely I would have thought and that would be obvious.

Praise removed due to pedantic speeeeeling comments.

Well there was little constructive that could have been done to help even if he had mentioned what car it was, or indeed not typed "ppl" which is aneurism territory for me as with any other form of the accursed modern plague of text-speak.

However the problem is obvious - the boost level is too low (and/or variable by the sound of it), and clearly to anyone with half a brain that can't be the fault of the spark plugs. At most they'd just prevent what did get pumped into the engine from burning properly. It's a boost controller, turbocharger, wastegate, ecu or similar issue. It could even be detonation causing a knock sensor to keep winding the boost off because of bad fuel or the engine starting to disintegrate because it's been buggered about with too much. Without a new set of batteries in the crystal ball we'd only be guessing though.

BTW "loose" - opposite of tight. "lose" - opposite of find.

I'd grumble if you'd replied like that to me. Grumpy old so & so! You only had to ask what engine he had and he did write a fairly lengthy post as opposed to some people here who make one line requests.

But it is infuriating when people post random questions for help, then giving us absolutely no information whatsoever.

Its well up there with people asking for assitance local to them etc....then giving us no clue where on planet earth they are. In fact some...I'd really wonder if they are on planet earth !!

I do agree with you Stevie when somebody new just posts "how much for a so and so" without so much as introducing himself but in this instance the OP posted a fairly lengthy first post and uploaded photo's and introduced himself as a newbie.

The content of the post may not have been top notch but I'd give him 8 out of 10 for making an effort and it's pretty simple for one of us to ask "what car mate" instead of replying like Grumpy. We all have 'off' days but we don't have to reply and piss somebody else off.

Oh FFS, I've not met Puma but his posts are far more useful than many and sometimes quite amusing. He's not being rude.

When you post on a forum asking for advice you need to give a lot of information . . . if you don't see fit to do that then it's doubtful that you would understand some of the answers given anyway, so you may as well take your car to a specialist !

Or maybe just not worry about everything so much . . . why do people care that he sounds grumpy . . . what's it to you or me ?

Sorry if I sound very English . . . but I am. Get a grip man ! smile

Without taking sides (or taking aim), my way of seeing things is:

If someone calls me an ugly four eyed bd for no reason other than the fact I drove into Halfords and stopped on my side of the road next to a car parked in a bay while he reverses out of his space, then drives onto my side of the road and sits looking at me....

He flashes his lights and gives me the "move your car you c**t" signal, whereupon I point out I have nowhere to go due to the red Polo on my left, the brace of cars on my right and him in my way on my side of the road ahead.

So he pulls up and calls me all the names for merely being there laugh

Instead of losing the plot, I simply pointed out that I didn't need my glasses, I only wore them to piss him off biggrin

He starts on another tirade and I let my Yorkie have a go shoot and he shat himself, but went on all the more furiously, not leaving much to the imagination about what a cock I was, etc bounce

I wait till he finished and pointed to his van (All Trades...seems he's a painter, sparky, builder, cowboy & so on) and said "Mate, y'know you have sat on your arse calling ME all the names when quite clearly YOU were the one in the wrong! I stopped to allow you to continue your manouvre, whereupon you ended up sitting on MY side of the road facing me and asking ME to get out of your way! At the end of the day, you're the one who has to do several jobs in order to make £100 per week, where as "I" merely have to lift the phone and speak a few words and earn £1000. Not bad for a minutes work from a fat, four eyed c**t with a silly hat and a precocious little mutt!"

I then pulled away and parked, waiting for him to come over and tt me smash

However, thats not enough for me. I plan to get my friend to get him in to give her a price to re decorate her whole house, room by room. Then I'll phone him later as "the irate husband" and tell him where he can go....nicely of course wink

When he asks why I am not happy with the price or whatever, I'll simply say "Us four eyed c**ts are like that!"

loser

So, to get to the original point of replying....Some folks would rather have a "polite" reply, even when they have made a small mistake that didn't cause any harm.

If you go flying in with your fists or tongue purely because someone "forgot" to name the make of their car, you are bound to upset folks.

Thats all smile

I thought PRs response was a very amusing, sarky way of going about getting the info TBH. Keep it up fella.
