An actor who did it for real. Played Major Howard (commander of the glider force that took Pegasus Bridge) in the film The Longest Day, but was actually there for real as a platoon commander in the Paras who were Howards reinforcements.

Must have been quite odd for him in 'The Longest Day' where, playing the role of Major John Howard, he encounters 'himself' (Captain of 7 Para) played by another actor.

It was my dad's funeral yesterday

He was a wartime bomber navigator so we watched Dambusters when we got home

Then read on Teletext that Richard Todd had died.
