I am surprised there is no thread about this.

I think Mandleson sounded very weak over this. I read it as: Well, at least there will be a big building and lots of land coming up for sale

Another big loss for the North East, havent seen anything from Vera Baird (MP for Redcar) on this subject, she seems to be far more concerned with "equality" than the people she's paid to represent.

Time to hang the minister. So that 1700 jobs at 30.00 per hour gone and another 10,000 jobs as a result will be lost locally, hey perhaps labour could create some new jobs at £5.50 per hour cos that what labour does cos they're tossers. Of course it wasn't the 10% green tax that caused this was it. (the only good kind of green is the dead kind)

If you take VM Ellesemere Port as an average, the figure is more likely to be £30k p.a. smile still 1,700 direct jobs and thousands of others as a direct result. thankfully the north is full of employment prospects for skilled steel works staff....... supprised somebody hasnt poped up and blammed Barnoess Thatcher wink

What exactly should the government have done that they didn't do?

IMHO, one of the things that this government could have done to help the industrial north, is to have ensured that the ship building industry was given every chance possible to thrive, we have this odd situation where even flagship UK registered ships like the QM2 are built abroad and as such all the infrastructure that forms a symbiotic relationship with the yards tend to close eventualy. The lack of government support resulting in the closure of Cammel Lairds in the late 90's is a perfect example of this government not going to bat for its people, for fear of upsetting anybody else

The way things are going if theres going to be a next generation of our naval or merchant fleet it will be built outside of the UK, using non UK produced steel.

This is one of my Dads Major clients. His business is going to suffer a lot with this news, very sad indeed.

Hope the bankers enjoy the tax payers money and nice bonus's, have a good Christmas chaps.

Who would have thought eh, a labour government bailing out banks and letting major corporations in the Northern heartlands collapse. Where is Tony Blair now, he used to love prancing around the same area a few years back to any camera crew or press photographer.

If they shut down the plant totally as far as i am aware it can never be reopened without whole new machinery, steel tends to go a bit hard when its cooled.

A tragic day for Teesside indeed, will be interesting to see the election results in Redcar 2010.

(okay okay i know the bankers who receive bonus's are in the supposed 'profit' making part of the banks and i know corus lost a major 10 year deal from Italy, but i Am shocked at how little government have done for one of the poorest areas in the UK, this will hit the local economy hard)

Terrible news for the whole North East. A terrible day for what left of British "industry" too.

Given that this is going on at the same time that a publicly owned bank is talking about giving bonuses of £1.5 bn, it's no wonder people are more than a little peed off by it. I hope there is something that can be done, but I doubt it.

I feel sorry for the redundant steel workers.
I think they will still blame Margaret Thatcher as will the Labour idiots.

Labour win ?

Realistically, the politicians are only passengers in the decision made,
aren't they ?

I used to think that the only two safe jobs in NE England were
working in S&N Breweries and working in the dole office.

Now they make Newcassel Broon down South in Yorkshire I'm not so sure.

In any event another sad day for NE England.

Why shouldn't they be dragged into this ... if you bail out one industry, then you should bail out all of them.
The rightful thing to do would have been to nationalise the banks and not bail them out - this way this sort of argument could not be used for other industries.

LONDON -(Dow Jones)- Corus, the European unit of Tata Steel Ltd. (500470.BY), said Friday it plans to build a pilot plant at its Ijmuiden steelworks in the Netherlands to test a new steelmaking process that could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 50%.
The company is working in consortium with the Ultra-Low CO2 Steelmaking research group or ULCOS to build a pilot plant to test a new technology called Hisarna.
The pilot plant will cost EUR20 million to build and will be able to produce 60,000 tons of steel a year. The plant should be operational by the fourth quarter of 2010, a Corus spokesman said.
Hisarna combines two technologies to reduce CO2 emissions. The first technology, developed by Corus, melts iron ore fines in a cyclone. The second technology, developed by Rio Tinto PLC (RTP), is called Hismelt and places the iron ore in a smelter vessel for final ore reduction and iron production.
The new steelmaking process requires significantly less coal usage and thus reduces the amount of CO2 emissions.Furthermore, it is a flexible process that allows partial substitution of coal by biomass, natural gas or even hydrogen(H2).
The new process could improve energy efficiency by 20%, Corus said.
The Dutch government is contributing EUR5 million while ULCOS and the European Commission will contribute the remaining EUR15 million in funding

How much longer is this country going to bury its head in its arse? - manufacturing is the way forward not these arty farty 'invisible' industries - this nation was founded on inventing/making stuff. Of course its cheaper to make it abroad until we can't afford it;)

Now, in relation to the rest of the EU, which major member country is most "offshore"?
Making stuff?
God no, that's nasty, we'd rather provide "services".

Well one sector provides the biggest chunk of the economy the other doesn't.

the right thing would have been to not bail anyone out.
