Black Van Man - Black Stig?
Discussion
The reign of White Van Man is over - Black Van Man is here....
Just heading out if Edinburgh on the A70 (Lang Whang), and as I passed the Kirknewton turn , a black VW van on an 08 plate pulled out behind me, sporting a very natty set of (what looked like TSW) alloys.
A couple of miles up the road we were stopped by some cattle on the road, and Black Van Man pulls up behind me in that "I'm invading your personal space" type way that says he means business. Hey ho, I think, and once the cows are off the road, I move off, perhaps a but quicker than I would have normally. Black Van Man still on my tail.
So, I increase the leptons, through a couple of corners, and BVM is still there, but this time he's out on the other side of the road, looking for the racing line into a fairly tight but quick left hander. Sadly, my Wan Li lego tyres prevent me from cornering or braking too hard in the wet ( or in the dry for that matter), so I couldn't really hustle, but BVM hung on in there all the way to the West Calder junction where I turned off, matching the vRS, which is no slouch, for pace all the way. A quick flash of the lights and a wave as I turned off, and off he rocketed. I half expected to see the Simpson helmet as he flashed past....
Which begs the question - what the hell does he have under the bonnet of that thing, and does anyone know him/ her?
Black Van Man, I salute you!

It may have been one of the vans the VW came up with to compete in that race series. They had one on 5th gear last week with David Coultard driving it. The name deserts me though. It was the same van they had at Knockhill a few months back and it was massively hyped up - and rolled on it's first lap (or there abouts).
Was it a caddy style van or transit style?

Was it the Transporter Sportline? With 172bhp and 400NM Torque, it would shift if it was empty.......think Top Gear did a run in it at some point as well.
Here it is http://videos.streetfire.net/video/Top-Gear-Season...

I know a guy with a 240ps transit that out guns his mates clio sport. Could be something like that.Just heading out if Edinburgh on the A70 (Lang Whang), and as I passed the Kirknewton turn , a black VW van on an 08 plate pulled out behind me, sporting a very natty set of (what looked like TSW) alloys.

Do they not do those VW vans with the 1.9 pd 130 ?
If he's no load it would shift.
Skoda used the 1.9PD in early Octavia vRS -certain that I've seen some at around 200 or more and with a remap -.If he's no load it would shift.
they didnt do a diesel in the mk1 octavia vrs, it was a 1.8t petrol
your thinking of the fabia...
Was looking at the caddy sportline last week, really nice van but didn't fancy spending over £20k on it. It's got 2lt tdi engine with 140ps, but a remap will give it 190!!! Can get them in black, red or silver.
I settled for the plain caddy, but it's still has the 140ps engine - collect it on Wednesday.
The transporter which was mentioned has got 174 ps and 400nm torque at 2000rpm. Wonder what a remap would give? 220brake??

VW even make a 4 wheel drive one with the inline 5 tdi engine. Pal of mine owns one with some mild tweaks its circa 190bhp and 300lbs/ft. Feels very quick when your in it, rather unsettling over the front wheels as well!
VW have the sportline series vans, the caddy has the 140bhp 2.0tdi engine, the transporter sportline (9/10 are black) has 174bhp on FWD. Either with a remap unlaidened makes a rather nippy van. However am mentioned above they are insanely expensive over a similar spec'ed non sportline variant. But for a van they do look good. Have a look at the rear suspension if you want a laugh northo!
Mercedes I think also make a V6 petrol van, but from memory the traction control destroys the tail end fun. Not that i looked heavily into a company van at all...

Nah, the T5 VW vans (around 04-59 plate) were:If he's no load it would shift.
1.9 in 90 or 104bhp
2.5 in 130 or 180bhp (approx)
I've got an 04 T5 LWB 2.5 130 in addition to the Z4, and it shifts fairly well. Around 1800kg empty so not lightning, but acceleration on the move between 40-80 leptons is awesome for a van. 36-39mpg no matter what you do lol. Handling is a tad scary though but I'm trying to* convince the wife that a set of Eibachs is a good idea.
Looking at a remap to 180bhp once we've completed a camper conversion and added a bit of interior weight...
(IIRC they're about to release a facelifted version of the T5 all using the 2.0 PD TDI at various outputs between 90 and 180bhp...)
- and failing...
Or BVM could be this one with a new paintjob?
