Firstly sorry if this is in the wrong forum. I recently ordered a michael jackson canvas as a present for a big fan. Its hand painted and made to order so not just a cheap print. I an no expert when it comes to hand painted canvases so could someone please tell me if there are any issues with it. I have included a photo of the main issue. The black area where the face is just doesnt seem properly black if you no what I mean, different shades that just dont look right. Can any experts please explain.

Face issue:

I bought this, but the mouth doesn't look right. Unfortunately the guy's dead now so i'm stuck with it.

Anyway - it's art, that's what you get, how the artist intended it. If you wanted a copy of the poster, you'd have been better off buying the printed versions.

They're called brush strokes. You tend to get them on paintings.

Looking at your pics it's because the paint is of differing thickness on the canvas. Where the texture of the canvas shows through the paint it will appear a different colour.

ETA It's perfectly normal.

ETA Damn spellchecker.

I thought it was something to do with paint thickness. But should it not be all one uniform colour? Is it a poor effort?

Thanks

Part of the appeal of art is the non-uniformity of it all.

It doesn't matter if it's black or white.

It's a painting of Michael fking Jackson. It could be any shade of "black" ranging from Midnight through to albino and it would still be accurate to some point in his life.

This may not much help with your question but it's a perfectly valid response to they receiver of the gift if they complain.

Just get some black felt tips and colour in the bits you don't think have been done correctly.

Was it expensive?

In answer to the question, this is perfectly normal and to be expected. If you want boring solid tones and 'perfection', but a poster. If you want something with texture and interest - buy a painting. Your painting is perfectly fine.

One other thing is there is the odd brush fibre left in the painting....normal?

Yes, quite. Have you never looked at a painting in a gallery before?
