Clothing advice!
Discussion
hi guys
So I went out for my first ride today on the BMC, 40 miles or so, it was good. Few things that needs addressing though. First of whch was the conti ultras. Binned. got 5 punctures on them in one ride ffs!
Anyway, what I need is to know a bit more about the clothing. I ideally want some cheapish tights that do not need anything to be worn underneath them and provide some comfort in the male region, as I am a bit worse for wear today after wearing football shorts and boxers.. ouch.
I also have an altura jacket, which is fine, but I really want to know what most people wear in the winter do they wear a base layer then the jacket, or something else?
I prefer to buy from CRC so if anyone has any idea what kind of stuff I need that would be great

Merino baselayers for me; not cheap but super comfy,
Endura 3/4 Humvees are great value IMO, but I've just bought some new liners which are more comfy with the baggy shorts over the top

I'm quite like Santa to bring a pair of more waterproof shorts to keep my bum dry tho!

Iv'e just gone for some Endura Hummvee's (standard) with the liners although yet to wear them on a ride. They review fairly well and seem popular so might be worth a look. Small sizing though so go one up if you do decide to buy. I plan to wear a full length base layer underneath the shorts just over the winter and if it's really cold full length thinnish wool socks with the feet cut off over my lower legs/shins underneath the base layer. MTB socks over both to try and keep the heat locked in.
Best option i could think of without spending to much, getting a trouser that i wouldn't want in the warmer months and still (hopefully) keeping warmish with little restriction round the knee's.

I'd suggest you get some decent bib shorts, leg warmers that cover your knees, and thermal tights. Those three items will do you all year round.
As mentioned above a good merino layer is essential, plus long and short sleeve tops, the jacket you've already got and I really like gillets - a thin waterproof one and a thick thermal one. Maybe arm warmers to go with the short top.
Two pairs of socks plus overshoes sort your feet. Glove liners are great as you can use them when it's not particulary cold as well as under proper gloves.
Sorted!

regular helly hansen lifa stuff is pretty good and although it has a reputation for retaining some rather unpleasant odours, its not the end of the world if you stink a bit whilst doing some phys...
i wear lifa tights under my bib shorts, always bib shorts!on top, either more lifa gear under an thicker ls cycling jersey or in the summer, just an ls jersey unless its really warm when ss will do but my arms often get cold and i cant be arsed with arm warmers as you look like a tit.. the thing about lifa gear is its quite usable for stuff like running so its pretty flexible and its cheap...

erformance ratio is spot on. There are better shorts out there but they do cost a whole lot more.
