Anyone tried The Feathers near Cliveden lately?
Discussion
I know this used to be a haunt of various PHers a few years back. We used to go there a lot, nice place. Well not any more.
We went there yesterday lunchtime. They have 'renovated' it and I think they are trying to emulate a kind of clubby winebar ambience. All stripped table tops (they sanded down the old worn/varnished tops and left the varnish around the edges), uncomfy chairs, odd cages with bottles of wine. V noisy coffee machine in the middle of the seating area. So not so pleasant IMO.
As for the food, well we only actually got to see one main course, a dry looking sandwich which took over 30 mins, before walking out due to how long it took to arrive. We arrived at 12:06 so its not like they were busy (I know because I checked my phone as I got out of the car). Too many foppy haired teenager wait-staff hanging around, even the one who I think was the manager looked no more than 20yrs old. Age not necessarily a problem, except he was a foppy as the rest of them. Then they wanted over £6 for the 'Italian Sandwich' that arrived, my burger was beyond them (and at over £10 with 'skinny fries' I was eargerly anticipating this masterpiece). The rest of the main course was £12-£15 per item.
I don't mind paying good money for good food and good service. In my experience The Feathers failed on both accounts. (Yes, I will be letting them know directly - manager not around when we left.)
We ended up at The Harvester in Holtspur and had free starter salad, 2 drinks, 2 mains for £15.88. Not such a posh environment, but we actually got fed.

Yep, I live up the road from there and used to go there quite a bit, went once when it re-opened a few months ago and now I only go there for a drink.
I felt the food was way overpriced and under portioned (my main looked like a starter), The Chequers up the road is much better value for money (OK, about the same cost as the feathers but much bigger portions and better food IMO).

Go to the Royal Standard around the corner (Wooburn Common Road next to Odd Farm).
A real pub with 10 real ales on tap all the time and the best smoking facilities in the country , like a colonial club with heaters.
Since the 'colonial club' was built 2 years ago, in the car park, not a single car has been burgled or damaged as there are always people there that watch.
Food is not bad either and prices (even beer) are far below the Chequers and Feathers even for the beer.
ETA: I am one of the regulars and am there every day on early doors (4 till 6), but not always in the Chim.

Thanks Cloggy - we've been past that pub 100s of times and never called in. Will try it now it is PH approved :-)A real pub with 10 real ales on tap all the time and the best smoking facilities in the country , like a colonial club with heaters.
