It's that time of year again where my brother and I wonder what on earth we are going to get our Dad for Christmas!

He's not really one for needing anything or wanting anything and his hobbies/interests don't lead us to get him anything.

So instead of giving ideas as to what to get my dad, I thought this thread could be a good place to share ideas for sons in similar situations. So what are you getting your dad or if you are a dad, what are you after?

I shall probably put together a hamper of some description. Like you, my Dad doesn't really need anything but usually appreciates some nice cheese, vino etc.

I too go down the hamper route for Dad - a bottle of his favourite Speyside malt and some nice chutney/pickles/cheeses etc.

Does he have a pride & joy?

I'm getting my dad a Tamiya scale kit of his Suzuki Hayabusa. Would have assembled and painted it myself if I had thought about it earlier, so will give it to him unassembled and give him the opportunity to do it himself or have it completed by me and given to him as his present for next xmas!

He doesn't have a P&J so can't do anything to do with that. Did the hamper thing last year which was good, the wine fridge before that (likes his vino / whiskey / cheese etc).

Might fall back on some nice wines and stuff for him. We've run out of nice whiskey to buy him!!

My Dad recently went into hospital and borrowed my Ipod. He has since been fascinated by the 'shuffle' function so his present from me is his own Ipod Shuffle and Speakers.

I have eventually given up and wrote a cheque this afternoon. He can buy what he wants!

In reality he won't buy anything and will just bank the cheque and add it to his balance but money is one of his favourite things so I guess he gets what he wants.

Get a magazine subscription for his favourite mag. That way he gets 12 presents spread throughout the year and remembers you each time he gets one.

That's a good thing!

My mother is spending my inheritance on all manner of rubbish.

Tell me about it. I watched all my grandparents spending about twenty years of really frugal retirement and handing down nice chunks of cash/property to my parents. Now my parents are holidaying 6 times a year and constantly replacing their cars and having expensive golf club memberships etc etc.

I am not bothered about any inheritance tax levels frown

Mine has just spent £50k on a fking motorhome because the cat (who travels with them, the one with the £250 radar on it's collar so she can track it down) prefers it to the £30k one she bought last year - ffs.

Well, in our case my parents have SAID the will be buying themselves a Wii for Christmas but haven't yet (despite our constant hints of telling them where they are on offer.....) so if they don't actually buy one, it'll be a pretty poor present...... biggrin
