My wife complains about the smell of petrol. I usually ignore her.

But recently due to her complaining I have realised that it smell stronger than normal.

When I park it in the garage there are not wet patches, so I assume I don't have a leak. Is this strong smell of petrol usual? Or should I be looking out for something?

Thanks

It is a known thing. Obviously check the fuel lines and the large filler pipe under the cap. Check the locking cap - it is designed so that when you turn the key the rubber flange on the base expands to create a seal. Wear can loosen the effect - there is obvious adjustment on the base.

BTW, do you smoke?! biggrin

I had a real strong smell of petrol when i opened the windows while driving, or in the garage when it was parked up. I tightened the seal on the petrol filler cap and i cant smell it any more. Your filler cap should be a nice tight fit (the flap thingy should be tight to lift up) if not then it's a good place to look. And also check the vent pipe is sticking out the under tray.

Vent pipe .. OK do I view this from the underside of the car? Am I able to see it ? Or do I view from inside the engine bay?

Ah yes the smell is really strong when I take it out from the garage.

My filler cap is quite loose and not a very tight fit if I remember correctly. I'll take a look on my way home when I fill up with petrol.

The vent pipe is black rubber and sticks out about an inch from the under tray, just infront of the passenger side rear wheel. When you lift up the latch on the petrol filler it should be tight, so when you close it again it makes the seal on the rubber o-ring. (If that makes sense)

My wife used to comment on the smell of gas in out porch ( the garage is integral ). Petrol, women, petrol - not gas !!

But, the thing to do, as already said, is tighten the screw on the underside of the filler cap. But don't do what I did and loosen it, otherwise when you put it in, you can't get it back out as it just whizzing round ( I had to undo the jubilee clip to move the big rubber fuel hose out of the way to get it out ).

Most points covered already, but just read this FAQ posted by PetrolTed, some useful info on all things Noble

Fuel Smell

Fuel smells in the cabin and around the car are most likely to be from the breather pipe.
The pipe runs from the filler neck between the cap and tank. It’s purpose is to vent the tank as it gets hot and to allow air in as the fuel level goes down. It also acts as an overflow of you overfill the tank.

The pipe runs into the compartment behind the panel in front of the rear NS wheel. It should poke out of the panel to atmosphere. Often the end of the pipe perishes and it pulls back into the compartment. This means the tank vents into the sill and compartment area and can trap the smell. It also means that any overflow can run straight into the compartment.

The most common modification is to use a P-clip to trap the pipe using one of the bottom screw holes holding the panel in.

In some cases, the smell can be from a fuel leak. This is most likely to be from a connection inside the pump/filter compartment. The seal may also have failed in the filter causing a drip where the two halves connect. obes
