Importing and Registering an Italian Classic

Hi, not sure if this is posted in the correct place so feel free to move.
I intend to import a car from Italy, bit of a project, but need to know if I need to register it immediately it gets here, as it needs some work , it would not be roadworthy so could not MOT it on arrival. Has anyone on here done this? and what are the rules and regs?

By all means notify the DVLA that the car is in the UK, however to register it, the car will need an MOT cert.

Thanks, I had intended bring it in , work on it, and say, register it a year or so later.
