Knocking on doors

Has anyone knocked on doors or walked the streets to find a job?has it been successful and what approach did you take

Long story involving a family fall out in the family business but yes my Father in Law but he did knock on the door of a company he had used to own and only sold this year, so knew the trade and the customers, got a job running the place till Christmas. I think that could be a little unrepresentative though.

I've done it twice, once when I got my first job I told the boss I was going into every shop on the high street looking for work which impressed him..and he had a job coming up the following Monday. What I didn't tell him until I left was that the person leaving was my best mate's brother! (1984)

The second time I actually did the full walk, from Marble Arch to Tottenham Court Road, filling in applications and dropping CVs off. I spotted Liberty down a side street (Argyll Street by Oxford Circus) and dead a mental headslap at not thinking of it before, wandered in and got an instant interview and an offer of temp work as the summer sale season was coming up. Temp turned Perm and I was there for over four years in the end - probably one of the best jobs I'll ever have.(1992)

I have recently been involved in recruiting a Customer Service team and as there are a few similar companies in my building we've had a couple of people just ring the bell and drop off a CV. I've interviewed them both as I appreciated the effort, but sadly they were not what we were looking for.

What line of work are you in?

Retail unfortunately,the industry is dead in my field which is home furnishings and I was in middle management,completely dessimated.I might have to retrain in something else.

I can imagine...I worked in that line at Liberty, Jerry's home Store (Fulham Road, now defunct) and Heal's before getting into Call Centre-based customer service as a better piad use of my soft skills...I'm a CS manager for an olnine casino now (10 years later) but still only earning what I did in my best year in retail in 'real terms'.
