Things needed to remove Trailing Arm S3

a job i need to do but want to make sure i have everything to hand

can someone give me a double at i check on what i need

Brake hose clamp
42 mm socket for Bearing
22 mm socket
21 mm Socket
?? Hex for CV Bolts
brake pipe spanner
?? socket size for brake hub removal
?? socket sixe for 4 bolts on trailing arm 1

parts i will need

1 X Trailing arm
1 X Bush
1 x 1/2 UNF Bolt Nyloc
1 x 3/4 UNF Bolt Nyloc
1 x 9/16 UNF Bolt Nyloc


also would it be easier to leave the brake hub on the arm and take it off on the bench ?

any advice appreciated

Hi Alan

good luck with it as its a bit of a struggle...

You need a long breaker bar for the 42mm socket - both should be 3/4" drive I think.
you will need your skinny spare wheel handy to get the 42mm socket thru to loosen it
if you are removing the brake and backplate, you will not need to remove the drive shaft so will not need the Torx Bolts loosened (I believe they are T45's) I removed the brake plate and refitted it when the arm was on the car - see my picture of the brake assembly removed here: (and click back/forward a couple of pics too...)

IIRC the other bolt heads you mention will all be regular sizes - 14mm etc... see the tools used in the picture (the knife was in case it all went terribly wrong )

21 mm Socket
?? Hex for CV Bolts : Torx 45 on my S3
brake pipe spanner : 9/16 also needed.

You need to remove the handbrake cable, impossible with brake hub on

13/16AF socket for the pivot bolt heads and 7/8AF or 22mm ring or combo spanner for the nuts IIRC. Don't think you'll get a socket on the inboard end of those fixings. 3/4AF or 19mm for the shocker bolt.

With care you can get the clips holding the brake pipe out and re-use them. Two piece on mine, the clip bit and a small bush pressed into the arm.

Have you Checked the other bush? it would be a shame not to renew it at this time if needed.

The hub nut is 41mm not 42.
