My f-i-l's laptop seems to have died, or be dying. Will only start in safe mode and I think this is a sign that its needing, what we would call in car terms, a good overhaul or service.

He is in Bellshill, can anyone recommend anyone local whose costs are reasonasble and does a good job? I am thinking of a "work from home indie" as opposed to a PC World job.

Sounds like it has a pile of viruses on it or at least one big nasty trojan.

I had to get a tower debugged (if that's the right turn of phrase) and used the wee shop on the high street. I took the tower in and got it back 2 days later all clean and working like new with some better anti virus software installed.

When was the last time your FIL ran a full security check with his current virus software or updated its list of viruses and lastly is the virus software subscription still valid.

Hi, there is one where Mossend cross used to be - have bought several parts from him but not had anything repaired.

If he still has the original Windows disk that came with it, he can just stick it in the drive and re-install. It's pretty straightforward and guides you through it all.

He'll need his license key, which is likely printed on a sticker on the underneath of the laptop. If he doesn't have his original disk he can borrow someone elses and use his own license key (all legally).

Worth a try before you call in the professionals!

Cheers for the info so far.
He is running Vista basic and the computer just stopped working and would only open in windows safe mode.
I spent most of last night working on it and have now taken it back to the last safe point at beginning of Dec and it would appear he has done no updates to his anti-virus, his ad aware, his windows updates etc.
So I left it running last night installing a Windows service pack so will see what stage it is at tonight.

But even before all this it was very slow - I am tempted to go down the road of copying his files (photos etc) out, and then reinstalling from scratch to see if that speeds it up any.

Failing that its off to the shop, might start with the guy in Mossend as that is local to FIL.

Cheers for help so far
