Career change to computer programming/website design help

I'm after any advice really. I've been working in aftersales in the motortrade for most of my working life and need a change. I love cars, but after a hard day at the dealership the enthusiasm starts to dwindle.

I'm willing to learn/study for required qualifications, but in what? I have built a few websites myself - which I know doesn't mean a thing without qualifications/experience to a potential employer.

I'm good with figures and databases, so I was looking at php and mysql and looking into courses. However what qualifications do I need to get a decent job? and am I better going for a course in something like C or HTML first?

Would any potential employers like to take on someone to train who has no previous experience and is 36 years old.
