Lookin to expand my collection of "war" books.

So whats good? must be non-fiction and not too dry. Have a bit of a collection already from older books like Goshawk Squadron (WW1 description of a flying squadron) through to Sniper one and 3 Para. Interested in all periods of "modern" warfare and would be particularly interested in books written by the other side.

cheers

How modern is "modern"?

At First Light is a great account by a spitfire pilot in the BoB, and I've just restarted reading Rifles which is an account of the development of the light infantry (and therefore modern military thinking) in the Napoleonic wars.

I can thoroughly recommend 'Chickenhawk' by Robert Mason. I think its probably the best book on war/conflict I've read. Its the recollections of a Huey chopper pilot in Vietnam. Not over gory and if you want a historical recounting of the war its not for you. Its very moving and fascinating at the same time.

If you want a more factual account I'd recommend Anthony Beevor's Stalingrad - a gruelling account of a gruelling battle. Am soon to read D day which is superb apparently.

Another vote for Chickenhawk, amazing insight of a Huey pilot in 'Nam.

Inside Delta Force by Eric L. Haney, an account from a founding member of the unit is quite good.
