well i recently bought a 1999 bmw E46 328CI, with 95K on the clock, and a full bmw service history.

and came with an mot certificate, issued on the 18th november, issued by quikfit.

now i went online through the old mot's earlier, and to my horror its done a few more miles than stated.

online it has the mot done on the 18th nov, but with 135K miles.

now im not too sure whats happened but im guessing after that mot, the car was clocked, they then got a fake mot certificate (looks very genuine), and then got another service book, and made up the service history(again looks very genuine, although they only used 2 stamps for 2 bmw dealers in the area). then chucked any history with the correct milage aswell as the original service book.

now im sure he has gone now, also i never saw which flat he came out of, and he was foreign but had good english, and did seem very genuine.

and i did get it at a good price, probably about right for the correct milage, and it does have loads of toys.

and the car is in very good condition, and drives well (definally can't tell its done 135K miles). only problem is a squeek coming from around the alternator but im sure its easily fixed.

so ill probably keep it, im not going to sell it onto someone else and pretend i don't know anything.

and i do really like the car, and im planning on keeping it for a few years.

and ive been told the 6 cylinder bmw engines should last well into there 200K's. so shouldn't have any real problems. and im sure most of the milage was motorway.

but if i leave the milage where it is ( as i don't really have money to get it reset) what will happen come mot, will they notice it has 40K less than the last mot on there system?

anything else i should do?

also i live 140 miles away from where i bought it, so going back and hunting the down isn't really an option, and he no longer answers his phone.

and a warning to everyone, to check the full mot history, and check it against the service history.

Sorry to hear... not a nice situation to be in, but it sounds like you're being quite pragmatic about it. With the new functionality of VOSA website I now always check it to help verify the mileage, and also usually phone garage in ther service history to verify records. All easy with hindsight and no help to you now.

If you're still happy with the car, then I'd try to source the original service history for it (BMW keep centralised records of their servicing). If you can get this, you could get the mileage corrected (increased!) and then you're back to having a genuine car with genuine history. Problem otherwise is that when you come to sell it you have to explain - you'd be tryng to sell a car with a chequered history!

Hope it works out ok - assume it was a private seller - are his details on the V5 or not?

I don't understand. What mileage is on the MOT certificate you got when you bought the car??

Surely this is something the police will be interested in?

You might be 140 miles away, but they'll have local BiB ready to visit him! You say he came out of a flat, but his address was surely on the V5?

i might try calling bmw and seeing what they can do, as there are quite a few reciepts from bmw for several services, so i think the chances are the car was serviced by bmw, but i hate to think how much they will charge for it aswell as resetting the milage.

and i have deffinally learnt my lesson on buying to check everything, and not to trust anyone, and luckily it is a reasonably cheap car.

and there was an address on the v5, but i don't have it as its been sent off.

the milage on the paper mot is 95K, but on the computer/online version it is 135K with every other info exactly the same.

silly question but do the MOT's upto the most recent preclude the mileage on it being correct? is it possible teh mileage online is incorrect?

i believe the online milage is correct, they couldn't get the milage wrong on every mot.

These sort of cars are ripe for clocking because they hide the miles well.

What makes you think it's only been clocked the once? [/devils avocado]

Surely connecting the car to a diagnostic system will confirm the mileage stored in the ECU? I think there's also a way of doing this via the reset buttons on the dials, check the E46 forums to confirm/deny. There could have been a dash swap for some reason.

+1
The police will be very interested in someone falsifying an MOT document. Use the Police, it's what they are here for and you may even get your money back and have had it's use for free. (Well maybe not but I'd still contact the Police)

Sorry to hear this..if it's correct!

Your initial post was interesting, you started off angry, mellowed in the middle, then convinced yourself all will be ok. *As i'm sure it will be..

Lesson learnt, check everything, then check again, BMW main dealers can give you service history over the phone, study the paperwork & HPI.

Nice car though, hope it works out ok for you.

I had this problem on the last supra I purchased. When they come into the UK they convert them from KM to Miles. The inporter will then sign a bit of paper with the original KM's and the date it was converted to miles.

This can be done in a few ways. Sometimes it will clock up in miles and you then have to add the KM on top to get the right reading, other times it will just carry on in KM.

The car I looked at showed 75km on the dash and in all the service history/MOT's so looked good for around 46k miles.

It was only until I drove to my old mans one day (I know its exactly 12 miles) I noticed the trip counter was counting in miles not KM!!!) Turned out the car had something like 70k miles on it frown

Lukily I actually made money on it when it sold so wasnt too upset but did leave a nasty taste in my mouth when I worked it out.

Yet another reason why you simply must buy a car with a FSH and the paperwork to back it up, and walk away unless everything feels totally right.

I'm sorry but everything you have described about the transaction would have alarm bells ringing for me. The car, the foreign owner, block of flats, the fact it has been to Kwikfit, the missing history, replacement books etc.

Go back and read the OP again.

Let's just hope that the car you are checking it against is the actual car you are driving, maybe the mileage isn't the only thing that got altered frown

To be honest, on a 1999 car you're very nearly in 'bangernomics' territory...Hopefully you didn't pay over the odds. As long as it starts, stops, goes, and looks decent enough I wouldn't worry too much. Cars can rack up huge mileages these days and have nothing to show for it...not like the old days when 100'000 miles (or 'around the clock') meant the engine was dead, assuming the rest of the car had't rusted to bits.
I agree it must be pretty annoying though.

I have. I still fail to see the correlation between FBMWSH on a 95k car and a duplicate service book with 2 random stamps...

If you're sure the MOT is fake then it really should go to the Police, plus of course, you need a copy of the original (or get the car MOT'd again).

That, and the MOT, seems a lot of trouble to go to and then not extract some value from them (you say the car was about the right price for the higher mileage).

I appreciate you don't have the V5C (it'll have the last address on it when it comes back) but was it the address of the flats that was on it?

Presumeably you didn't HPI it? (Knowing the correct address is vital for the HPI).

In that case you couldn't claim compensation as you haven't suffered any loss.
