Drag Racing --- For or Against?

The folk who post on PH’s Drag Racing forum are obviously hooked on the sport.
But I’m aware that not everyone in the general commonwealth of motorsport enthusiasts shares the addiction. Some even seem viscerally hostile.
I’d be intrigued to learn what people in the wider world think of the Drags.
Love them? Hate them? Not really bothered?

It depends...
Bracket racing - dull. Clever, but dull.
Top fuel - Purest AWESOME !!! Especially live. You cannot beat the experience of having every fibre of your body shaken by a top fuel dragster.
Anything in between - take it as it comes. Some can be good, some a bit dull.
IME it's best experienced live so you can wander round the cars and see them being prepped and the whole buzz about getting them ready in time for another run.
I enjoy watching it on TV, but the quality of coverage by ESPN of the NHRA racing is pretty much unequalled anywhere else, which can sort of take the edge off watching things like the European championship stuff for example.

I'd go along with that....especially experiencing TF or FC live, there really is nothing else, motorsport wise to compare with the experience of being next 5,000hp Bracket racing - dull. Clever, but dull.

I've only been into them for the past year. Top Fuel Digger invited me along to last years Flame and Thunder and ever since then I've loved it.
On the one hand watching cars go in a straight line for a few seconds is dull. On the other to be stood in an open paddock chocking on nitromethane and the sound, not a rumble of V8 but a crack. A f*cking loud one too.
Leaning over the railings as they stage and then they go. the proper fast cars are a good example of how slow sound moves. The car has come and gone and you get hit by the sound waves. The best way I can think to describe it is like being sat on by a big fat person. It is that heavy. there are little targets you like to see met. more than 200mph and less than 6.0 seconds are what I like to see.

One of those things you have to go and see to appreciate really, TV does not do it justice...
I've been going to the pod for.. Im not quite sure how long.. 8 years maybe? something like that. It gets addictive.
Pro stick and pro mod are great because its just so close - a few years ago 6.4 was a good pro mod time, now if you can't run 6.1s consistently you are no where.
Fuel classes are just mental, the bark of a fuel engine being revved, the way the ground shakes as they pass seemingly as a wall of sound, noise and violent movement, the smell of burnt nitro afterwards, the grin of your mates at the 300mph run you just watched says it all (just as well seeing as you're now deaf ).
As with everything once you get in to it you start to appreciate what it takes to get a good run - "the tune", the equipment in the cars, the tactics, the work the teams (who aren't paid for the most part) put in.
Despite the downturn and lots of teams/manufacturers pulling out of motorsport (SEAT, Vauxhall out of BTCC, BMW, SEAT, Chevy all scaling back WTCC involvement, Honda, Toyota, Bridgestone, BMW all out of F1) Santa Pod was busier than ever this year with more and more teams in the FIA / NDRS classes. Its great to see.
