So,

She has gone and done it. Bought a real tree, as the new cottage has a higher ceiling.
She also heard that you can prolong the life of the tree by spraying it with hairspray.

I have a baaaaad feeling about this one.

Its all going pear shaped i tell you.

What do you think?

Hair spray is extremely flammable, more so before it is dry. The result of ignition is moderate to serious burns to the hair, head and upper torso, sometimes resulting in death[/i]

Just cut the bottom inch or half inch from the stalk and keep the tree well watered and in a cool room.

That it all you need.

Anything that involves anything flammable and you is a recipe for disaster....

Some hairspray is flammable!...if you check garden centres there is a liquid you can ad to the tree base, (you should have it secured in a water filled base. The liquid stops the tree from sealing itself and allow it to suck up water from the base, thus remaining green. Here is the tricky bit: you need to saw off a small portion of the trunk to allow the tree to remain open just before putting it up. I live in Canada so not sure of UK brand names but this works well. If you cannot find it, this put some sugar in the water which is also helpful.
DO not cut the tree with a chainsaw, however.

This is how flammable a real Christmas tree is BEFORE you putting hairspray on it:

We can laugh at with Emsman when he posts using his nose from his hospital bed!

Yes, use plenty of hairspray. And real candles too, like in the olden days.

On the one show last night they did some tests, they found Hair spray did nothing but putting a cap full of bleach in the water each day killed off all the paracites and the tree lasted a couple of weeks longer. I will be trying that.

I'm sure that Hairspray won't be flattered if you ask him over for Christmas to sit on the top of your tree.

Sorry Josh, couldn't resist!

They did a test on the One Show last night and the tree that shed the most was the tree covered in hairspray. One of the best to keep it's needles was stood in water.

+1

I saw this too and the tree covered in hairspray came out worst. Don't do it!

(was funny when he shook the tree though, and literally every needle fell of it biglaugh )

So far in the voting then, it appears only one of you says let nature take its course, and the vast majority couldnt care less, provided i catch the (inevitable) explosion on video.

It should be an interesting weekend
