Quite a dramatic change!

Pushes things back towards winning or podium

+ Good thing is with the bigger field that more get the chance of points.

2009 final standings*
1. Jenson Button - 232.5
2. Sebastian Vettel - 203
3. Rubens Barrichello - 182
4. Mark Webber - 177

No real changes then...

2008 final standings*
1. Lewis Hamilton - 239
2. Felipe Massa - 237
3. Kimi Raikkonen - 188
4. Robert Kubica - 175

  • added up quickly. Will almost certainly contain errors
So really, there are no changes to the top 4 over the last two seasons. Maybe it won't affect the bigger teams that much afterall.

clap

quick work

I didn't expect it to make much difference at the top, other than the total come end of year being higher - so current/future drivers will climb the point scoring ladder quicker.

That more guys get a shot at a couple of points seems to me a good thing, but what will also be interesting - getting to 4th or better makes each overtake worth 5 points - could be enough to encourage more fun at the front too!

Whats good about that?

Rewarding mediocrity by giving points lower and lower down does nothing for the show

Its good to widen the gap between winners and points scorers, but theres no need to give points to the whole grid

Looking at how competetive this year has been - 1 second covering 10 or 15 cars in Q1 or Q2 at times is hardly mediocre and at the end of the day if less than 1/3 of the grid gets points then over 2/3 of the cars/teams and their sponsors go home disappointed - maybe for good.

10 out 26 cars getting points is hardly 'the whole grid' in fact not far away from the same proportion as this year!

Thinking exactly the same as 'NewMetalSystem' they have just stretched the original idea a bit a due to there being more teams it won't make a huge difference, the idea is hardly inspired is it.

Also remember that the teams get paid for every point they score in the championship.
This new system will distribute the cash further down the field, possibly giving teams like force India a much larger share as they should be scoring points more regularly.

I think this is a pretty good thing, more teams, more points and more emphasis on the win.

Better than those bloody medals that Bernie wanted anyway.

How long has a similar points system been in operation with Motogp? And how many fans, riders, teams, commentators etc. have had ground to moan about that..?

Thumbs-up from me.

It gives the lesser teams something to fight for. One could argue it's be a major factor in teams disappearing over the years.

I think thats all it is, theres no extra incentive to win in relation to the previous system - a 25% increase in points over second.

In reality it doesn't widen the variation of points for the main positions, all theyve done is multiply up the points won. If you multiply this year's points allocation by 2.5 you get

10 becomes 25 points
8 becomes 20 points
6 becomes 15 points

So in effect its exactly the same as this year's system.

Its only the lower order where the distribution of points changes, 4th to 6th now get effectively less points than this year so I guess you could say there's now more net reward for getting on the podium. 7th to 10th get more in 2010 than 09 though.

The bottom end scores don't make much sense to me. Why are there two points between 4th-5th, 5th-6th and then one between 6th-7th before going back to two between 7th-8th?

IMO they should be 25 points for a win, 15 for second, 10 for third, 8 for fourth, 6 for fifth, 5 for sixth, 4 for seventh, 3 for eighth, 2 for ninth and 1 for 10th place.

Well done and thanks to NEWMETALSYSTEM for working out the results on the top 4, but i wonder what the results look like further down the field.

How many times did the Force India or the Williams for example finish in 9th or 10th missing out on points? Did this happen more often than say Renault finishing in the points at all?

Might change things further down the grid and shake up the championship positions lower down. Some may argue this doesnt really matter, but the promotional revenue, tv rights etc all get distributed based on overal results and seriously helps the smaller teams bank balances.

Mere tinkering for the sake of tinkering as per usual rather than drastic change.

Drivers and Constructors points should be seperated.

Proposed 2010 points scoring system should be for Constructors Championship only.

Seperate points scoring system for drivers championship should be podium based only.

1st = 10 points
2nd = 5 points
3rd = 3 points

That's it smile

Actually, despite my earlier post, I always thought that the only thing that needed changing was an increase in points for 1st place from 10 to 12.

This is stupid, it's not going to affect the top of the field, only the bottom.

Did anyone see that episode of Never Mind the Buzzcocks where they had the special "Double points show"?

I wish they would just settle the thing. Historic comparisons are impossible with these constant revisions.
