Noisy clock.

I've just bought a retro mantle clock from ebay. The clock works fine but the tick tocking is far too loud.
Is there anything I can do to make it quieter.

Greasing the mechanism maybe?

I'd hazard a guess that greasing the mechanism won't do much except slow it down, the tick-tock comes from the bit that ratchets the hands forward. I remember clocks in my grandmothers house making a din but it seemed to become background noise after a while.
Failing that, smother it with a pillow and shoot it in the head...
