Hi Guys,

I am about to install 2000 SP4 onto my pc and was wondering how to copy the information and files across from ME? Does it happen automatically, or is their anything that I need to do manually?

Appreciate the help.

Thanks

mmm, to be honest, I wouldnt trust the upgrade as far as I can throw it. I know that the upgrade from 98/me to XP will loose the contacts, favourites and my documents stuff in most cases. So would suggest a complete backup first and go from there.

Maybe a resident Windows expert can help?

Upgrade 9x to 2K isnt bad all things considered. The install will try and keep as much as possible and you can do a prepass to see the software thats not compatible with W2K.

Just bang the CD and it should take care of everything for you.

I don't think ME can be upgraded to anything. It needs a fresh install.

You can upgrade ME according to the Windows XP box and the Editors review on Amazon (which will be lifted from M$):

www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005MOTG/102-1931270-6450548

I've never tried it to be honest (Rule 1: NEVER install anything based on DOS and 2: NEVER upgrade an OS to a new version, reinstall the fecker).

Upgraded an ME install to WinXP Pro after hiring a new employee and needing certain XP compatible software on the computer - No problems at all...

It should work OK, but doesn't always. It really depends on the applications that you have installed at the time of upgrade. As I'm sure you appreciate, if an application install routine does the following:

if OS=95 then copy win95.dll
elseif OS=XP then copy winXP.dll

Then that application will not function correctly after the upgrade. From experience it's always safer to reinstall from scratch and that way you know that if you encounter any problems subsequently it won't be because of the upgrade.
