99 T Chim 500 and weird noise from rear

Guys

I am getting a constant noise from the rear which sounds something like helicoptor rota-blades (sorry for the lack of technical spiel)but it's the only way I can decribe it. The noise increases with road speed and is most noticeable at around 40mph. Would I be right in thinking it could be either a wheel bearing or a diff problem or is this normal?. The noise is still noticeable with the clutch dipped. Any help on this would much appreciated and costs etc.

Definately not normal,sounds very much like a diff problem,fingers crossed that its a wheel bearing though

Perhaps the previous owner used the old peg and cardboard trick on the spokes for that go-faster sound!

Could also be a drive shaft or a loose bit of suspension moving as the car travels. Diff mounts can get loose. Could also be prop shaft UJ.

I'm taking the car over to a friends garage this evening..he's go a pit so I will ask him to check the things you mentioned.

I have just bought the "bible" so I hope my technical know how improves in time!

1998 R 5.0 weird noise from the rear, I am pretty sure its the diff, will wait untill it gets worse before i replace it

With you saying its a noise like rota-blades, do you mean a clack-clack type of noise? If so, could be a warped rear disc where the pad touches the disc for an instant every disc rotation, I have this at the moment, going in for the service soon so will sort it then. The way to test to check for the warped disc is to lightly put your foot on the brake whilst going 40 or 50, if warped you'll feel a slight pulsating in the pedal. Or throw a bucket of water over both back discs before going for a run, if the noise reappears after some time when the water has 'gone' it points to a warped disc.

I have a noisy diff on mine, though its more of a constant noise.

Thanks for the response.

I do apologise for the lack of technical description. it sounds as if a wheel isnt balanced properly but with a droning sound..if you can imagine how a car tyre would sound with a slight flat spot and add a whirring kind of droning sound. A mechanic friend has had the car on his ramp and checked all the things the guys have mentioned like suspension, joints, discs, wheel bearings and they all seem to be ok and no leaks from the diff and it's lube level is fine(that doesn’t mean to say there isn’t a prblem with it)The car has Kumho 2454516 on the rear put on by the previous owner..I dont think these tyres are of particularly good quality and the mechanic did mention that these tyres are very hard compared to Bridgestone’s etc. I'm wondering if it's because of these tyres and it's just road noisevibration and what's more I think I can only hear the noise when the roof is up??

Any more ideas?

Not sure to be honest......am no expert

I had some marshall tyres on mine when I bought it, changed them to SO3's and the handling was transformed. Do you get any pulsation in your brake pedal....if not that rules the discs out. I believe the way to check the bearings is to jack the car up and bang the wheel from the underneath and any significant movement indicates a worn bearing. You could try searching in the archives here for more ideas. Or could drop into your local dealer and ask them to check it for you....should be no charge for someone to sit in the car with you and go for a short drive.

IMO droning is a wheel bearing (or maybe other bearing). Grinding type noise can be diff. Light scraping is just disc/pad noise and easily diagnosed as posted above.
