Hi, I need a good tow-vehicle, and social car with something that is not too flashy. Was considering a 4.0 Discovery (03\04 facelift) with an LPG system as I reckon this will be easier to run than the TD5, which is horrifically slow, especially with a trailer on. Are the V8's reliable, anything to look out for?

Also in the mix is and early LandCruiser 4.7V8, which has all got big miles on them for the same money, I reckoned the Disco was better value, any thoughts?

What I ever I buy, it will be covering in the region on 35,000 miles p.a.

I had a brief fling with a Freelander Td4 which I enjoyed and drove a TD5 Disco twice with a trailer (I lost time in my life which I'll not get back again laugh ) so I'm looking for some honest guidance from people with the experience.

Many thanks for your help.

35,000 miles a year? If you can afford the fuel bills then I'd say Landcruiser all the way. With that many miles it sounds like you'll be on the motorway a lot so cornering ability is not an issue.

Of course the sensible money will be on having a good cheap tow car/4x4 AND a daily drive car.

Disco 3 is a very comfortable drive, had a few as courtesy cars. Very impressed. Upmarketish and capable at the same time. If I needed 7 seats, would have one of these instead of the RRS all day long.

I don't tow much so can't be that much help.

But have a look on www.disco3.co.uk.

Pretty much someone on there has done everything to and with a D3. Including LPG conversions etc.

Good Luck.

I know the miles sound a lot, but I will have to deliver as well as rep in this car as it is for my own business, but I reckon I can save about 6k a year on fuel if I had LPG V8 compared to TD5. I would love a Disco 3, but a bit outside my budget at the moment!rolleyes

The Toyota will be more reliable, they are built to last unlike Disco's and tow the best.

Ever considered a Suzuki sj410 4speed? Panda 4wd? laugh

I'd go with a low mile disco 3 v8 and change it after 2 years.

Check out the replacement parts cost for the Toyota. I remember a jurno writing a piece about running one and the costs were staggering.
