In February my girlfriend is going to hong kong, shes vegetarian and also allergic to peanuts, now we've heard that peanut oil is basically all they use over there, does anyone know if this is the case or is there anywhere in hong kong that doesnt use peanut oil?

I lived and worked in Hongkong for a few years.

Tell her she has no problems, and that most of what you find on the shelves at Tesco is also available there. Eating out may be a different matter, but should be safe enough with salad type dishes.

Historically most far east restaurants aren't really set up for nut allergies. A few of the western hotels will be better, but generally the cuisine has so many nuts in it, they've killed off most people with issues in a natural selection sort of way.

As Graham says, doing self catering isn't a problem. Eating out...well you'll probably find that however much you say you don't want nuts, they'll add them anyway as it'll be better with them!

As said above, asia does not realy "get" food alergies, i suffer rather badly from coconut ..... (either eating or when they land on my head .... )

Have just learnt to sniff out what dishes do and do not have the evil stuff!

Nuts or peanuts (which aren't nuts in fact they're legumes)? Quite separate allergies in fact.

Only reason I ask is if it's a legume allergy, watch out for soya as well. Tofu springs to mind.

I always manage in China / Hong Kong, and I'm there a bit.

I'm vegetarian....

They REALLY don't get that. At all.

For vegetarians, just go to a Buddhist restaurant. Kung Tak Lam is a good one in Causeway Bay.

Yep, the standard cooking oil does tend to be peanut oil (but rape seed oil on the mainland, go figure)

Hmm, best to get your hotel concierge to write a note (in Chinese) saying that she is allergic, and do they use it? At least you can show that to the restarant manager, and leave if they can't accomodate you
