Just noticed this little gem today -

Question for anyone who knows?

I have 3 motorcycles with old logbooks sitting in my garage, never been taken out for years, or for that matter taxed or insured. As such I have never declared them 'off road'.

Am I about to receive 3 tax bills (fines)?

For once I think this could be a good bit of legislation, as it will help keep the uninsured off the road - Then again they don’t care and will drive anyway.

bugger hadn't thought about that, worse still I've got 2 log books for motorbike frames that I've used on race bikes and never SORN'd them

I (and a few others here) have recently been done for failing to SORN a vehicle. It seems like they've got a nice efficient (no really) new computer at DVLA, and they may catch up with you. I'd fill in 3 SORNs as it's £25 a pop if they catch you.

SORN has been around since 1998 or so, I think all that's changed is the severity of the fines for not making a declaration.

If the affected vehicle(s) has/have not been on the road since before the scheme came into being - Jan 98? - then you do not have to make a declaration, or something like that...

Just tell them you posted it to them. It's not your fault if they have lost it/ not recieved it/any other excuse.

If the scameras don't have to rely on successful delivery of a NIP to prove their case, the same should apply with a SORN.

Worked for me when my dopey son forgot to send one off.

Nick - if your right I'm in the clear - all are well before 98 - certainly no mention on the log book?

I've got a Suzuki 400 in my garage, the last time it went on the road (taxed of course) was Aug/Sept '97, tax ran out Oct'97. I asked at my local Post Office Tax place and was told that if the bike had been off the road before SORN's came out, you did not need to have a SORN now.

Not so, according to a face-to-face at my local DVLA last week.

They required me to declare a '97 off-the-road there and then.

No. What's changed is that they now have a computer that can actually work out whether you've paid your tax or not. They may have increased the fines as well of course.

That's not new.

Couple of years ago............

renewed on time
lost tax disc same day
went to DVLA for duplicate
"that'll be seven quid, sir"
"ah, can't do that yet"
"why"
"post office record takes 6 weeks to get to our computer. Come back in 6 weeks. We'll give you a letter in case you get pulled"
got duplicate 6 weeks later
got fixed penalty 2 months later
went to DVLA
"why send me this?"
"coz a warden saw you drive by"
"but you knew I came for a duplicate the day after I renewed"
"yes, but we didn't know if you renewed on the 1st"
"but.......THE DUPLICATE"
"yes, well, we knew we'd given you one, but we had to fax Swansea to get a copy of the post office date record"
"And........?"
"well, they sent the document for the wrong registration, so we thought we'd better fine you........."
Aaaaaaaaaaaarghhhhhhh....................!

cheer up just got a tax renewal notice for one of the company vans telling me tax is due end of month. problem is had a private plate taken of the van in june last year and at the same time paid and received a tax disc for twelve months, rang swansea to see why the information is wrong and was told they couldnt change the info on the computer and so i had to photocopy the disc and send a letter in to a special department....could be worse when do they transfer to a indian call centre...(joke i think).
while im on sorry about the rant but been on ocuk site and ran the van details through the rac reg data base as supplied by dvla it reckons the van was reg. in aug98 and built by ford in december 98 i do hope the anpr vans info is more up to date. gary

Gfun.

SORN does not apply if a GB vehicle if:

No Licence, nor Nil Licence was in force for the vehicle on 31.1.98, and

a Licence not taken out for a period after that date, and,

vehicle not used or a kept on a Public Road.

If NI vehicle same applies except date is 30.11.2002.

Satisfy the above conditions and you are OK.

R.V (Registration and Licensing) Regs 2002 Schedule 4.

Gfun, when you say "old logbooks" are they V5s or proper logbooks? If not V5s and they are not on DVLA's database the bikes may not even exist anymore ...

No they are V5s - one of them was the old log book but had sorted that game of soldiers way before 98!

Thanks for all the advice !
