i always go to my parents for christmas dinner, and this year my mum has asked me to organise a 'table game' for after dinner.
this is my only task for the day so i am prepared to put some effort in, but i am completely stumped for ideas.
only family will be there, 7 adults of which i'm the youngest. the aim is to prolong dinner and have a laugh rather than watch crap telly and wait for my dad to fall asleep after drinking too much.
any ideas? all suggestions [apart from charades] welcome
or should i just buy wii sports?

Uno is a great game with that amount of people, we seem to be the only household in the family not to own a pack and really should as we're hosting this year.
We often play Oh Hell instead, can be quite amusing and also reasonably quick to learn. Just needs a pack of normal playing cards.

We had a fantastic set of crackers last year, where the present inside each one was a whistle, each whistle being numbered and of a different pitch. The pack came with some sheet music (all in terms of the number of the whistle) and conductors batton. With an age range of 6 to 72 we all enjoyed it.

Human Buckeroo.
If Pa's the type of chap who'll fall asleep after a good feed and a few drinks, take it in turns to place small objects on his body.
Hilarious when it all goes off.
First laugh of the day - thanks! If Pa's the type of chap who'll fall asleep after a good feed and a few drinks, take it in turns to place small objects on his body.

Will certainly see if we can play this at Christmas.

Shirt,
Your post reminded me of a game I haven’t played for many years but which used to gel the family around the table like no other in the days before computer games. The game is best with a good mix of oldies and kids but the version played solely by adults trying to both take it seriously and not be seen to be taking it seriously is a very fine thing. And if nothing else you’ve made me write the rules out and I will be e-mailing these to various family members on Christmas Eve.
Buzz Rules
A card game for up to 10 players.
You will need a pack of cards, enough coins to fund several games and/or act as banker/change giver to those who don’t have the right coins, and a bowl in the middle of the table for the coins to go into as people are ‘buzzed’
1. Each player buys in with 5 coins of equal value. In the typical ‘family round the table’ scenario adults should play with 20p coins (or higher) and infants with 10p coins (or smaller). (It is customary for adults to fund infants play and – where possible – manipulate the game so that the infants win).
2. Deal each player 5 cards
3. The player on the dealers left starts. Play continues clockwise until all cards have been played.
4. The starting player places a card of their choice on the table.
5. The next player, if they have a card of the same value they MUST play that card and say ‘Buzz’. The player of the original card, having been buzzed, puts one of their tokens into the pot. If the next player also has a card of the same value they MUST play that card and say ‘Buzz buzz’. The middle player in this sequence must then put two tokens into the pot. Similarly if the next player has the forth card of the same value they MUST play it and declare ‘Buzz buzz buzz’ which costs the preceding player three of their tokens. A ‘buzz buzz buzz’ is, of course, very rare.*
6. If the subsequent player does not have a card of the same value they play any of their cards. You quickly work out that if you have been dealt a pair or three of a kind it is much safer to play these cards first.
7. When you have been (cumulatively) buzzed 5 times you are out. Play continues until there is one person left – the winner.

- In a legendary 1978 two pack game for 18 players we witnessed a ‘Buzz, buzz, buzz, buzz, buzz, buzz, buzz, buzz’!!! The excitement was genuinely off the scale.
