Ive lost count of the amount of Ebay bashing/complaining threads on PH over the last 12 months.
Ive been using Ebay since Jan 2001 and have about 500 feedbacks (all positive angel) and can honestly say I've never had any real problems in that time, even in the last 2 years since its been invaded by "scammers".

It may be that these PH'ers are new to Ebay (do these people exist?) and are just being a little nieve or they are just thick - I just don't understand how people can be ripped off on Ebay? confused

Whenever I sell stuff I ban anyone with less than five positive feedbacks or anyone with less than 98% positive feedback, and all new ebayers. Ive sold cars (about 15) BMX stuff, toys, clothes etc and never had any problems with people messing me around. smile
I never buy anything from people who dont have the above criteria.

Maybe its just the fact that people only complain about something but never commend it if all is well so it seems that Ebay is full of scammers and dodgy stuff. wavey

On the whole it's all good.

I just wish it was a bit cheaper!

And if everyone had you exclusion criteria Ebay would cease to exist eventually!

It works if you know that you're going to pay 15% in fees and that you might get caught by somebody dishonest. The chances of you meeting a scammer greatly depends on what you're selling/buying.

In short, keep your eyes open.

I've been on since '98 and havent had any real problems. You need to have your eyes open to the potential pitfalls and generally you'll be ok.

Been scammed once, hasn't put me off, got my money back through Ebay/Paypal and that was it. Superb idea EBAY is imo.

Used it since 2004, no real problems. Purchased a lot of stuff in the past, as well as sold some.

Only got ripped off once (buying non-existant gift vouchers), PayPal sorted that one out.

Used them on a few occassions - same day despatch, next day delivery! Never failed me (all were Buy It Now priced, some discounted as on sale).

Some auction items tend to go too cheap due to lack of bids, ending up in cancelled sales.

I like the idea of EBay; but I do not like the way it conducts itself.

The fees are extortionate for selling, (insertion fee, final value fee) you are then charged to use PayPal to transfer the funds even though this is EBay owned.

It is in reality an absolute rip off, but it remains the best place to sell stuff as the exposure is enormous.

It's just a shame it's such a scam in itself.

Its still pretty damn good for buying and there are plenty of bargains to be had. I used to sell a lot, but that naturally tailed off as I went to college and the fee's started to rise. With all this 'fixed postage prices, no negative feedback, must offer paypal' etc etc that i read (so may not all be true) it doesn't seem worth going back to selling apart from the odd individual items.

I generally buy 10-20 items a month on ebay, and of those I have one case I have to get a return on every 2-3 months. Usually the seller is totally happy to accept the return, but every now and then I have to put in an ebay/PayPal claim.

Last time I got actually conned was about 5 years ago when someone sold me two tickets for Reading Festival, what I actually got was one ticket and one credit card receipt, printed on the same paper as the ticket (same format etc.). They also turned up on the Monday after the festival. Ebay wouldn't accept the claim as I hadn't paid by PayPal, so went to the Police. They traced him using the credit card details from the fake "ticket", he denied all knowledge of his scam. Nothing they could do.

Only ever had one issue when I relaxed my rules and bought from someone with less than 50 Feedback and less than 98% score, that said Paypal sorted it out eventually....

Otherwise never had an issue and still use it regularly smile

Started using it a lot recently (more selling than buying)

There is a bit of muppetry going on, silly and obvious questions posted by buyers that are clearly answered in the description of the item - but otherwise no problems.

Agreed the fees are high, but then again if there was a better alternative, people would use that.

Ebid is an alternative. But, in all honesty.

It's rubbish.

Ebay have well and truly got the market sewn up, tight.

To be fair the technology behind it all seems really rather impressive. To emulate that would surely take £millions of investment to get even a gnat's c0ck hair close.

I started a small buiness on it about 18 months ago, for the first 6 months it worked very well, built up a shop and got a huge amount of feedback, then they started implementing a new pricing structure and new rules that basically back the buyer all the way.

I ended up closing it a few months ago as so many people got the idea that if you say you didnt recieve it you will instantly get your money back, so I was loosing money left right and centre, items apparently going missing, never being delivered and each one kept taking money out of my pocket, all the items were of low value and with the fee increase I was loosing 40% of my margin over night, ended up in a total loss due to all the payouts I was making.

They just dont favour the small business any more and it was just not viable.

I use it to buy jewellery making supplies. I wouldn't sell on it, nor would I buy anything big from it (such as a mobile phone or laptop) because the biggest problems seem to be in the large value electronics sections. I'll just stick to the craft section, haven't had a problem on there yet.

I think it has it's place... I wouldnt use it for high value items at all. I've only been screwed over once (and that was for a big purchase Grrr!)

I've not tried selling anything yet though so don't know how well that works - that reminds me I've got some stuff I need to sell!

What are you comparing it to?

If you go and find your local bricks and mortar auction house, you'll find their fees are almost certainly higher than Ebay's, and they're reaching a much smaller audience for you.

If you compare it to putting a free ad in your local paper, then of course it's more expensive. How much is your time worth though to place a free ad in every single local paper in the country to get the same level of coverage?

Personally, I think for what they offer, they're pretty cheap. I've sold all sorts of stuff on there which, without it, I just never would've sold, and 85% of something is more than 100% of nothing.
