Hi

All among a list of cars i am toying with buying is the maser quattro evolution and the ghibli. What are the main issues with them in terms of costs and failures?

I am aware they can be fragile which is what i want to know about.

Also any ideas about the residuals. Will they depreciate at the same rate as an alfa 156/147 gta or will they now start appreciating etc?

Rust Rust Rust, interesting electrics (CEL comes on periodically just to say hello) variable quality in the motors means some last forever whilst others don’t, alternator is low down at the front so should be seen as something to recon when servicing!
Factory exhausts don’t last too long, but good excuse to go for a stainless to make it sound a little better.
Front tyres prone to wear quickly,
Some parts are rather tricky to get hold of ( I had to make a headlight out of spare parts for the last one I had!)
Dif seals go and in later cars the mounting cage is conveniently positioned to block access to the filler! Engine needs to come out for a cam chain service.

Most will have had paint, one of the easiest tell tales of a bad / cheap job is that the aerofoil over the wipers is a bugger to get off unless you’ve got hands like a small girls, so check to see if it’s been removed for paint.
Prod the sills with a screwdriver from underneath as the plastic covers hide bodges quite well

Other than that great cars, fun to drive and superb dry weather handling, not too bad on fuel, VERY practical for what they are, I've done around 70k miles in various cars, for day to day use I preferred the later autos, the cups will be the one to collect in a few years (getting that way now).

Plenty of folks on Maseratifoum with them

Surely not front wheel drive???

Anyway thanks for the help and linky will do a bit of research but not looking for a project and was thinking of buying this weekend coming so no time to look for a decent one so will scrap it as an idea i think for now and maybe go for an alfa instead. Veeeery tempted to get a gta sportwagon as they are uber cool and will hold their value really well but im a single bloke with no kids so hmmmm difficult.

No rear, just the suspension setup scrubs the outside of the front tyres quicker than you'd expect from a rear drive.

I've toyed with the idea of buying a Quattroporte IV Evo for a long time. The manual gearbox is much better than the auto though finding a good one is hard. Prices seem to be solid at around £10k for a good private one. Some parts are very expensive (suspension, brake discs) so check it out carefully.

This looks great
http://pistonheads.com/sales/1372167.htm

but...had a look at the sellers PH cars list & it seems to have lost a few miles since earlier in the year ? So put me off a bit ,but it looks superb.

Ah sjn2004 followed your link & it appears to be the car that was discussed on there before post: Ghibli, thanks.
