I carol sing round my village most years with a church choir. We have about 20 carols to choose from, and sing all the verses in the proper choral arrangements in 4 part harmony. Badged collectors with tins collect money, which goes to the Children's Society.

So they're not all bad!

Our doorbell has never worked. Anyone we know will usually call or will have arranged beforehand to come over, so if anyone ever comes to the door unannounced, we simply don't answer as it will either be a salesperson or some seasonal crap.

Makes life easy.

Same with our home phone, we only have it because we have to get broadband through the phone line, so if anyone ever calls, it is someone who does not know either of our mobile numbers, therefore not worth speaking to.
