if you want a easy to drive car then a auto is fine, its not a sports mode box an certainly is slooooow compared to a manaual when you are pulling away but once up to speed its fine.
general things to look for on mk3s are
1) rust on sills
2) rust on arches - can be hidden by the VR6 bodykit (if its a pre 95model)
3) rust on tailgate
4) worn out rear axle bushes - a slightly vague steering sense going around corners, almost like the back doesnt want to follow the front
5) worn front suspension + top mounts - the VR is quite a weight so suspension can sag.
things to be aware of with VR6
1) depending on millage (anything above 80k) ask if the head gasket, cam chains and clutch have been done. Cam chains are a £600 job an need gearbox splitting from block so clutch is usually done at same time. some last 100k some 150k - there is no set interval but its a good bargaining tool.
2) signs of worn chains - listen to the RHS of the engine for a marble in a tin can like sound.
3) take it for a drive an make sure coolant gets to around half and the fans cut in.
