Staying in London Jan 18-26..what is the best meal?
Discussion
Well, not really too budget constrained. Coming from Canada, steak houses not exactly novel. In the past have eaten at Square (hated it) Ramsays original resto on Royal Hospital roed, (very good) plus loads of more regular places. Will pro do two or three really good meals when I am there. Its an off peak period so should not be impossible.

try j sheekey for seafood, the narrow in wapping is pretty good gastro pub stuff, and the best meal i've ever had in london was at claridge's (actually, it's the best meal i've ever had anywhere)
+1 on J Sheekey's. Scott's is in the same group and is also as good, if not better.I've just been looking at reviews for all the nice restaurants around the West End for a Birthday bash in January and I've pretty much decided on Sheekey's being one of the best for food, value for money, surroundings and service for the money I want to spend.
I 've recently heard from someone who's into their fine dining restaurants, that this place is seriously good.

I ate at Artisan at the Westbury Hotel on Tuesday night. Utterly fantastic meal, with a very modern European flavour. Excellent, attentive, knowledgeable waiting staff, and very accommodating front of house.
I had a game terrine starter, followed by venison, and both were among the best I have tasted. Cheese trolley was a little disappointing (although I am a glutton for dessert cheese), but MrsD200's passionfruit cheesecake was absolutely not (judging by her reactions). Winelist runs to 20-odd pages, and there's a fair range of prices too. Each course was punctuated by a fun, tasty but cleansing amuse bouche, as well as a pre-starter.
Three courses for two, with champagne and wine came to around £130 per head. Fantastic value for the location, quality of food and service.

If you want seafood, Randall and Aubin: http://www.randallandaubin.com/ Get a window seat and you can watch the comings and goings of the, er, smut industry's customers.
Best overall meal I still think was Maze, though I would also mention Carluccio's for Italian.
For more 'normal' eating (and prices) we seem to have quite a few decent chain restaurants at present: Cote, Strada, Ping Pong, Zizzi just to name a few. Not fine dining, but a step up from sandwiches or 'pub grub'.
