I run a classic car hire company - The Open Road and we provide each hirer with a set of detailed maps, leisure drives and some specific drives that we have set.

Inevitably customers arrive guided by SatNav and now prefer using SatNav to reading maps. While SatNov sort of goes against the idea of hiring a classic car I am keen to deliver excellent customer service.

Does anyone know of a current SatNav device that can be set to memorise an entire route?

I would like to be abe to drive the routes I have set, using maps, but have a SatNav record them so that customers can follow the whole route on the machine. That I can give customers the option of using old technology (maps) or taking the easy way out and following the SatNav.

At the risk of asking for the impossible I would also want to be able to copy routes from one SatNav device to another one so that I can use one SatNav as a Master and then produce a number containing the same information so that I can provide these to more than one customer at a time.

All information gracefully received.

in short yes, iirc both garmina dn tom tom have this kind of capabilty.

I certainly can on my Garmin Nuvi... using a combination of some garmin software and even google maps i can create a route on my pc, then down load it on to the sat nav.

I've done it when planning routes

Thanks for the info. I want to avoid using maps as some of the routes I have set are quite tortuos and very difficult to plot electronically.

Interetsing enough I asked one of the sales staff at my local Halfords if any of their range of Tom Toms could do this and was told a very definite no.

If it's easier, you can even set a TomTom to track your route, thereby negating the need to 'map it' once it's been driven once.

But yes, routes can be preset on a TomTom via your computer (saving having to input it on the TomTom itself) and saved as a '.ITN' file. Try TYRE (Trace Your Route Everywhere):

You can create the route on Google Maps and convert it to a file format (ITN) that the TomTom can read. It's really easy to do!

OP, not every Tomtom version has this feature, which is called 'Itinerary Planning'. Make sure you buy a version which does.

I too like TYRE which lets you plan a route on a PC and transfer it to either Tomtom or Garmin units.

Without using a PC, routes can be easily transferred from one Tomtom to another using Bluetooth; again, this feature will probably not be available in all models.

Funk, please can you give more info about how to use this feature, of which I was not aware?

I use TripMaster on my TomTom which logs waypoints.

I think you can actually set TYRE up to do it as well, but I've not played about with that yet. As with all things like this, I'd suggest taking a backup of your TomTom before meddling with it, just in case..! wink

Thanks for explaining. Have you found Tomtom stable with this plugin? Any issues at all?

Works just fine. TripMaster gives you loads of cool info that I never knew the TomTom could do before like elevation, inclinometer etc. Very funky!

Like I say, TYRE does it too (the clue's in the name; 'Trace Your Route Everywhere') but I've never used it for that.
