Hi all,

After a situation in a thread a few months ago I have had an idea to help the homeless - not on mass, but more one on one, but am a bit unsure of where to start. It would involve large companies getting involved.

Anyone have any ideas or pointers?

ok, well having helped (in a small way) a fellow pher get a little more on his feet a while ago and (yes, many other terribly sad causes, cancer, children dying etc etc) I have always felt terribly sorry for people living on the streets. I pass a few every day and often try to do something for them, food, coffee, money etc etc, however, this is only addressing things in the very short/immediate term and does no long term good really.

I was thinking that, if, rather than trying to save the homeless en masse, you started with a few people and tried to get them properly back on their feet.

I appreciate that not everyone wants/necessarily deserves to be helped but I did think that even if you could make a difference to a few people then its worth it.

The way I thought of doing it is.. after vetting people somewhat in terms of any addiction etc.. almost doing a sort of Jamie oliver 15 type idea to give them a chance..

So you get maybe 4 large businesses involved to sponsor them.. however, they dont do it for nothing.. the idea is that the person, once cleaned up and presentable could be given a work share type scenario, even people with minimal skills or training can (plucking ideas out of head) - wash cars, sort/deliver mail, wash windows etc etc etc.

The finer details (and yes, aware there are many, not least where do they live), could be ironed out but thats the idea in principle.

The end result being that word spreads, companies get kudos/brand awareness for helping the homeless in their immediate area, more companies sign up.

I havent thought it all through and yes, there are a million pitfalls and obstacles to overcome, but in principle, thats it..

Would I receive a cuddly vagabon on a key chain and regular letters from the sponsored hobo? laugh

Not sure about starting up a charity but Mrs G_T knows how to set up accounts etc. so if you have a specific question about finances or accounts drop me PM and I'll ask.

You can start a charity the same way you start a company, Register it.
They give you the numbers you need to seem legit and go from there.

How you actually get the facilities to get it up and running are a different matter all together. Banks need to be kind, So will land lords and suppliers, you will need grants and maybe lottery funding to get it all up and working who knows how you get that mate.

Well done for trying to do some good though.
