Just watched a docu on this. What an amazing story, made even better by the test pilot / astronaut Mike Melville looking like cross between a Wallace & Grommet character and our own Eric Mc and pulling on extra woolly socks because his feet got cold at the edge of space, and steering 'by looking out of the window'.



Would the gubberment have permitted such irresponsibility in the UK?

A fair amount of Apollo and Soyuz navigation was carried out by "looking out the window". It's amazingly effective, even in space.

Also, today I have been compared to Clive James and Mike Melville. I'm well chuffed (even if they are both about 20 years older than me).
