Hotel & night out advice needed for Edinburgh......

Hi everyone

I don't normally post here because I live a long way south from you. However next May I will be exploring some of the great roads you have on your doorsteps with 17 mates travelling in/on a selection of cars and motorbikes.

Thanks to lots of help from Get Carter our route up / down the West coast is sorted. Due to the remote nature of the area sorting where to stay, eat & drink was very straightforward for most of the nights because there wasn't much to choose from!

The problem I have is that on Sunday 9th May we will be staying in Edinburgh (where there are lots of choices) before travelling home on the Monday and while most of our group know Edinburgh has a great reputation as a place to visit, noboby knows anything about the place! Someone from work recommended http://www.bluescotland.co.uk/ but they're not open on Sundays.

What we need is a simple B&B/hotel as close to the centre as possible without being silly 5 star city centre money that has 8 twin rooms & 1 double, plus some off road parking. We'd be happy in something like a Holiday Inn Express but would ideally prefer something a bit more individual. Most importantly (!) we'd also like to find a pub/bar that does decent beer with some good food nearby - not worried what style of food, we'd be happy with traditional pub grub, curry, Thai, Italian etc etc etc......

Can anyone offer any suggestions?

There's a whole host of guest houses on Minto St and Dalkeith Rd which will be easy to get at if you've a long trip up from the south. Have a squiz on tripadvisor, afraid I can't help much on that front as I live here!
There's also a lot on West Coates/Roseberry Cres which are better for escaping to the West.

Plenty food options round Haymarket too.
Chop Chop featured on the F-word recently.
Ignite/Omar Kayam/Verandah are decent curry places.
Chiang Mai for Thai.
Sushi place too.
McKirdy's Steakhouse on Morrison St
First Coast for decent scottish (no really) scran a wee bit further down Dalry Rd.
Also sizzling scot and la partenope on the same block.

Teuchters on William St is worth going for decent ales
Cafe Royal for decent beers, nice Scottish island bar is worth a visit in the city centre too. Prepare to wait ages for a drink in there though. Fancy porcelain in the bogs an all.

Few suggestions to get you started and to get us all arguing anyways.

I wouldnt worry about being too close to the city centre, its not that big! It also has a very good bus service where you can get a 'day saver' for about £3 which gives you unlimited travel for the day, so as long as your hotel is on a good bus route you will be fine.

As for pubs and restuarants, there are loads. The Kennelworth in Rose Street (just behind Princes Street)is good tratitional pub that does great pub food. Time 4 Thai on Castle Street has great Thai food and not expensive. The Mussel Inn on Rose Street for some great seafood. Another vote for the Chop Shop at Haymarket.

Watch out for the Edinlushes threads on this site, you will get good pub and restaurant advise there since we only go to decent reasonably priced pubs and restaurants

Premier Inn on Morrison Street is about as central, economical and simple as I can think off. It has its own car park which is something you guys will need to watch out for, parking in Edinburgh is at best tricky and expensive, at worst non existent.

Most of the city centre places are geared at the hostel gang or the 4 & 5 star visitors although the Apex hotels are all central and possibly offer the only middle ground between the high end individual and sometimes grand stuff and the multiple number of Premier Inns, Travel Lodges and Holiday Inn's. There are now eight travel lodges in and around town alone!

What about big hotel at the Zoo - Holiday Inn? Plenty parking and a short hop into town

Yup Holiday Inn on Corstorphine Road, next to Edinburgh Zoo, a large carpark to the rear shared with the Zoo, only a 10 min bus ride to Princes Street and plenty of buses to choose from too.

Only problem is if you turn up during the day you have to queue with the other zoo traffic and queue on a hill. The entire hill smells of burnt clutch.

There's a Holiday Inn Express down by the Ocean Terminal. Off road parking and regular buses up Leith Walk into town. Re: Minto Street/Dalkeith Road I don't think most of the B&Bs there have room for more than 2-3 cars offroad so they may not be suitable.

Some of the DR ones have pretty hefty car parks round the back!
