Bought a 530d M Sport back in May 09 from a BMW dealer in Leeds. The car was an AUC car with warranty remaining.

During the recent heavy rains the wife rang to say there is water dripping in to the car from the windscreen - this only happened when it was raining very hard. The car was booked in to a BMW dealer to be looked at - they confirmed that the windscreen has been replaced (it is a BMW windscreen).

I rang up the dealer I bought from and they said they are unaware of the windscreen being replaced and that they have no record of this.

It would cost £500 to have the windscreen taken out and resealed (according to the dealer the car is with). Okay its a BMW dealer and someone else could probably do it at half the price but thats not the point here.

The thing is that I was sold a AUC car with a dodgy windscreen. The dealership from where the car was bought from have said they will not pay for this and want nothing to do with it.

Any advice on what to do?

Wouldn't your insurance company foot the bill for a replacement screen if the existing screen was damaged by a flying hammer, sorry stone.

they will, at a cost of 50 quid or so, but it shouldn't have been leaking in the first place!

It should be a clear warranty issue but it seems that it might have been done off the books by a dealer, so no record to show that BMW were the ones that fitted it.

Whether or not done by BMW, it was sold by them and therefore it should be covered.

Good luck with this. My experience is that if you cannot prove without a doubt it was sold like that AND take it through the courts, they are not bothered.

Bought an AUC car and discovered the first time I used the key in the door lock - some 3 months after buying it - that the barrel had snapped off inside the door. It is inoperative.

Supplying dealer: Not our problem. Could have happened since.
Local dealer: Not covered under warranty. Contact supplying dealer.

your angle here needs to be - my car is leaking water, please sort it out under the AUC warranty.

Let them decide what needs to be done to resolve that.

I would at least report it to BMW Customer Service and ask if they believe it should be covered by your AUC warranty.

BMW Customer Service will almost certainly tell you to speak to the supplying dealer, BMW Customer Service should be able to name the supplying dealer's sales director.

I would then speak to the supplying dealer's sales director and tell them the problem and exactly what you expect from them. If the dealer doesn't resolve the issue for you then you can go back to BMW Customer Service, and tell them what steps you have taken, to see whether they can take up the case for you.

A1 windscreens in wakefield took my old knackered screen out, went away for 2 weeks whilst i fixed the rust round the frame and slapped a new one in for £130. Including them driving to east leeds and back twice. this is on an e36 coupe, £500 seems a bit optimistic.

They told me the reason my last sceen had delaminated, fogged up and caused the frame to rot was that it had a replacement insurance company screen at some point, which are cheap nasty no name stuff with poor quality thinner glass. So watch out if you get an insurance screen replacement.

AUC warranty does not cover trims or seals

I would ask the supplying dealer if you can see the jobcard and AUC check sheets to see if a fault with the screen had been reported. I'm guessing that the sales department had a new genuine screen fitted, but have outsourced the fitting.

If you don't get anywhere with the dealer, keep on at BMW customer services. Keep it polite and explain how it has ruined your experience of BMW.

The dealer has confirmed this is not a warranty issue as windscreens and trims are not covered by AUC warranty.

I've been on to the dealer principal this morning. Will let you know how I get on. His words were on the lines of "there is no evidence of windscreen work carried out to the vehcile but we will do all we can to try and resolve this"...

+1 (a large hammer) - but as you have stupidly visited your dealer now, I think you will have to pay the £500+......

You have an AUC car which you've not had the screen replaced on.
Therefore, it must have been like that when you bought it.
What else would you do than take it to the dealer ?

OP, I'd call the main glass replacement firms to see if they did the work (even though it is a BMW screen) - it may be recorded on their system.

BMW GB should have a record of every repair carried out by a BMW dealer on the car - useful if the car's been to more than one dealer.
