Every so often I have a look around Kamchatka for the raw, uncut look of nature.

Today I found this:

Google aerial

You can see where the river used to run all the way down the valley.

This is also awesome:

Googe aerial

It's like a fractal.

I can sorta see the fractal thing you're talking about and I kinda agree.

What causes/caused the first? I get when rivers erode the land and create ox-bow lakes, etc - but I don't get that - or is it man made?

I guess it's caused when parts of a river silt up and the flow finds the next easiest route...?
