..well, in the flat anyway.

It seems that despite my girlfriend's borderline OCD cleaning regime in a spotless flat, one or more furry friends have made their way into the back of a kitchen drawer and gnawed through a load of rice and pasta.

So, just after a few tips on the best way to sort the problem. Does it mean getting some mouse traps and planting them behind the kitchen units? (there doesn't seem to be any evidence of them in the rest of the flat)

If so, are the traditional, basic traps the best ones to go for and what should be used as bait? I vaguely recall that jam is better to use than cheese, but may be making that up!

i think someone actually said chocolate, but hard cheese has worked for me before.
jam it onto that spike and it's bound to go off.

The early bird catches the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese...

A mate of mine had a mouse infestation in his uni digs. On one occasion he trapped one under a bucket; his housemate then caved its skull in with a hammer. I thought this was a particularly effective method of vermin control...

I hear that peanut butter is a good bait.

But then, if she's a hygiene nut then a dead mouse will freak her out.

Simplest route IMHO is to find where they're getting in and block it up. Or buy a cat biggrin

Pop down your nearest sewer, capture a couple of rats and then set these free in the kitchen. They will devour the mice in no time, and you can then bathe in the warm glow of your girlfriend's loving appreciation. smile

If the Mrs is squeamish then try one of the "humane" traps. These catch the mouse alive.

Then, when she's out/in the bath/asleep you can quietly take it out the back and release it into the wild cave its head in with a hammer... evil

Or just go into any garden centre and buy a mouse trap, bit of cheese / biscuit and set it up, job done. Never fails.

My dad used to use raw bacon to trap 'em in the garage.

(Although if those mice are anything to go by, fertiliser or fishing groundbait also make good mouse bait)

Why not buy some Meccano and a few big elastic bands, and rig up a sort of trebuchet? Mouse steps onto platform, weight of rodent triggers mechanism, and hey presto: you get to scrape blood, guts and fur off the front of the fridge. Job done. smile

Mice don't like cheese. Peanut butter, grapes or raisins are all good for catching mice/rats

Peanut butter's worked best for me in the past - if in doubt you can use peanut butter then stick a little chunk of chocolate into it. Guaranteed to trigger just about any mousetrap while the little pest attempts to get away with that sticky mess, unlike cheese or chocolate on it's own, which they've managed to swipe from the most sensitive traps in the past.

Mice don't like cheese.
With respect that's not correct. I've trapped many mice always with a bit of cheddar cheese.

Bog-standard traps with a bit of cake or bread jammed against the skirting board will work every time.

Bit of snickers bar pressed well on and put the trap against the skirting board as they run along close to the side of the board.

glue traps are good, if you're up to despatching them yourself.

Caught one a few months ago by bashing his little head in with what felt like a heavy duty candlestick holder. Crappy piece of ikea junk fell to bits. Think the mouse got the message though.

To date, in our less than airtight flat:

glue traps :: 3
snap traps :: 2
candlestick :: 1
3" x 2" :: 1

Bird nuts, not the salted type, on the old style wooden mouse trap/s, placed adjacent to skirting board, or where droppings have been discovered.

Bird nuts,
This man talks sense.

I say that because today I found that our bag of bird peanuts had been raided by a mouse. The little bugger had left all the brown skin in my old car fixing coat, at least he bird eat all of the nuts!

Only problem I've got now is that as ours will be a field mouse SWMBO wants to leave it more food out rolleyes
