Two adults, two kids under 4. Last chance to travel outside school holidays. Somewhere in the sun for a week. Any suggestions? Am considering Dubai but not sure why!

Exactly the same boat here - we're looking at the Canaries or Cape Verde...

Canaries will be nice in Feb/March. Pretty child friendly too - lots of good beaches and restaurants.

Exchange rate has spoilt the bargin they were a few years ago 'tho - I'd choose half board rather than self catering so you know what your costs will be up front. Food and booze in the shops is not cheap anymore and excursions are pricey too.

If you're after sunshine then best weather is southern Lanzarote - Playa Blanca, or northern Furteventura - Correlejo. These two spots are sheltered from the ne trades by the mountains near Yazia which gives a sunnier micro climate in the these resorts than anywhere else.

Playa Blanca is mostly big multinational 4* hotels with an older clientele and Correlejo is much more biased toward self catering and a bit Chavy in parts. Furventura has stunning beaches and lots of sandy little bays at El Cotillo which the kids will love. Papagayo beaches on Lanzarote are nice too, but the rest of the beaches on Lanzarote are nothing special. The sea will be freezing and the evenings may be a bit chilly.

There's some stunning mountaious and volcanic scenery inland on both islands if you're up for some exploring, car hire is dirt cheap (try Orcar) and you'll find some good, completely deserted hooning roads too.
