Loose Steering

Evening all,
Just driven the OH's car this evening and was shocked at how loose the steering felt.
Pulled into a garage to check pressures etc and found the inner quarter of both tyres virtually tread free - not good.
I have Event coming out to change the tyres on Thursday but they do seem ridiculously worn to me on the inners but plenty of tread above the markers on the outside.
Does this point to wishbone bushes or the like? Surely can't just be tracking?
Appreciate the steering will feel vague if the tyres are worn but this feels like the steering is not connected - feck knows how she has been driving it. Will not have time to get it jacked up to check for play at the front until the weekend.
