See if you can find a local valeter ( Or a detailer ) who has a tornador gun they can use. No risk of damage to components etc, just a great result!

Link to "Modena Scotland"s Lambo engine being cleaned using one:-

A tornador Gun will work on average soiling , for really heavy old soiling then a degreaser such as Surfex HD

http://www.bilthamber.com/surfex-hd.html

there many other products aswell another example

http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/engine-amp-exterior/...

both these dont leave the horrid smeal that jizer and gunk do .

I cover components with thick kitchen foil , this stays there and does not get blown away from a hose or low pressure jet wash while washing done the engine .

Nice soft brush and work away gently at the grime

Here you can see covered the coil packs before washing

Foil rapped around alternator (be very carefull of positve terminal on back of alternator make sure its insulated well)

If you a really worried about your old electrics then cut up a dustbin bag into small sections cover all components your not sure off then rap foil around the dustbin bag sections the foil will keep the bags in place

HTH

Just been going through my mind about your 23 year old grubby engine while i was in my world of machine polishing a black boxter S wink

You can use a light acid base cleaner such as

http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/wheels-and-tyres/val...

http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/wheels-and-tyres/meg...

i used wheel brightner diluted on a very old engine such as yours to bring it up like new , the standard degreasers just did not clean the corrosion on the alloy , be carefull and dilute well can give you results such as this

Before if i did not need to say

After biggrin

Does anyone know if the air comes out of the flexible tube in the middle, or around the outside in the trumpet?

I'd say that one must be air, and the other "enzyme digester", but it's not clear which is which.

ETA,

Thinking on, the air must be in the trumpet....

I never realised there were so many different cleaning compounds though.

Air comes from the tube inside the trumpet wink

Tube rotates inside the diameter of the trumpet .

Yes you can .

work well on the robust type plastics of vans etc , fast way of getting rid of dust and dirt from building trade vehicle's which would take hours without the gun

where? (I did quite a bit of googling!) - found one (old) site in devon somewhere that seemed to have an online shop, but it didn't look particularly inspiring

Aha!
So both the air and the fluid come out of the flexi pipe, and are mixed in the gun. The trumpet is presumably closed at the gun end, and serves to cause the flexi pipe to rotate, under the vacuum?
